Meet David Zilmer

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Zilmer.

Hi David, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have been playing and singing since I can remember, around the age of 11-12 I had already realized I didn’t want to do anything else, by the time I was 17-18 I was going to studios as well as trying to record other people with the little equipment I had. I would go to Wynwood with friends and busk all night, that fed my desires even more to form my own band and continue writing songs. As well as using the skills I’ve cultivated to teach guitar/vocals/piano etc. throughout the community.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
“If it never rains, you can’t appreciate the sunshine.”

This journey has had plenty of trials and tribulations. The biggest one so far was locking down a good team of like-minded individuals who stand firm on their values and beliefs and are willing to grow together as well.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m currently working on a solo project as well as finishing the album for my band. Tewahedo means unity in the Ethiopian language of ge’ez, we are a 3-piece band from all different walks of life. We describe our genre or style as “freedom music” as it does not conform to any preexisting labels, this puts us at an advantage because we are able to play anywhere to anyone and still create a sense of unity and uplift the community.

What’s next?
I am releasing a solo project next year, as well as an album for Tewahedo, also I am finishing up the branding and logo so that we can start making some merch, we are planning an upper east coast tour next year if all falls into place, by that time the episode we filmed for context of a generation should be aired and the music video for our single stay done.
