Today we’d like to introduce you to David Diaz.
David, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I learned to appreciate music from a very young age. Growing up in New York, I was surrounded by it regularly. Whether it was hearing jazz play on the radio when I woke up in the morning or going on a field trip to the ballet. Music was always a part of my life. I only started pursuing a career in music when I was in college and began my studies in philosophy.
Before that, I mainly just posted covers on Youtube for fun. During that time, I hid my face because I was insecure and afraid of rejection, but most of all, the thought of being famous or recognized was unappealing. So, I kept my face hidden. Over the years, I gained a small following, and over time they began asking me when I would release original music and reveal who I was.
The thought of being vulnerable and letting people hear music about me and my life terrified me, but eventually, I decided it was time to overcome my fear. Since then, I’ve learned to find strength in vulnerability and authenticity in my life and music. Besides the support from my incredible fans, friends, and family, who I am beyond thankful for, I feel that is what ultimately got me to where I am now.
Without taking the steps I needed to uncover the artist I always hoped to be, I don’t think I would be where I am today. I make music and establish safe spaces (both in person and on social media) to encourage understanding and connection between our fellow humans. I can’t change the world, but I accept that my choices have consequences, and I choose to make positive ones.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I have my fair share of struggles. For most of my life, I’ve experienced imposter syndrome. I have a very complex relationship with success. I have a habit of convincing myself that it’s safer not to dream big or set idealistic goals to avoid disappointment.
I rarely feel I deserve it when something good happens to me. I’ve been better about it, though, and I’m actively working on remembering to accept and value my success and have more confidence in myself and my abilities as an artist.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a recording artist, songwriter, musician, mixing engineer, and vocal producer. I specialize in singing, songwriting, and vocal production. I guess you can say I am known mostly for singing and songwriting.
Oddly enough, I would say that I am most proud of my independence. Over the years, I have gotten to know myself and become comfortable being alone with my thoughts. I realized that many people need constant input as a distraction from reality and day-to-day life, but I have come to appreciate and crave stillness and find solace in my own company.
My knowledge and passion for philosophy and its incorporation into my music sets me apart from other artists. Most artists write about situations or experiences not everyone can relate to. My songs are primarily based on the human experience, and being human is something we have in common.
Music is purely subjective. It’s a personal experience with the listener and the art. and can be expressed and perceived in infinite ways. I love to find ways to connect with people emotionally and meaningfully, and my music is one of the forms in which I do that.
What are your plans for the future?
I don’t want to give away all my plans, but I can say that I am currently working on multiple projects, at the moment. Even some collaborations! So, I am very excited to share everything when it’s finished so I can share what I’ve been up to.
