Thanks for sharing your story with us Dave. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
It all started over tacos.
Velosurance is a national insurance program founded by two avid cyclists, Dave Williams and Denis Voitenko in response to the insurance needs of bicycle riders nationwide.
One very rainy day in 2012, at a local taco joint in Fort Lauderdale, we started discussing how badly home and renters policies insured bicycles. We knew there had to be a better way so we set about finding out how we could take a traditional piece of insurance and make it better, much better. On that wet day over tacos, Velosurance was founded.
We partnered with Markel American Insurance Company, an A.M. Best, A rated, US insurance company, and a leader in recreational insurance, to offer a multi-risk bicycle insurance policy providing protection to all types of cyclists, and with none of the silly restrictions that other insurance wants to place on riders.
We are able to insure bicycles in every State as well as Washington DC and to date we have covered more than 20,000 bikes. Many cyclists are now riding a bike that cost more than their first car and insuring the bike is the best way to protect a financial loss if the worst were to happen, like a theft or crash.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest pushback has been from cyclists who believe their high valued bike is somehow covered by another insurance policy they own and in most cases that isn’t the case. It often takes a claim to find out just how terribly home insurance deals with a bicycle theft or damage claim. It also makes sense to insure the bicycle through a stand alone policy that will not affect your other policies and case of a bicycle claim.

All we do at Velosurance is insure bicycles. We are a cyclist owned and cyclist staffed insurance agency and we all answer the phones seven days a week.
What I am most proud of is that we were able to disrupt the insurance industry with a product that until Velosurance was part of a cobbled together policy that was outdated and neglected. We are a 100% digital company meaning we are also 100% paperless.

Pricing:
- Rough rule of thumb is that it will cost 7.5% to 10% of the bike’s value to fully protect it with a Velosurance policy.
