Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel Perez.
Daniel, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’m from Cuba, came to the United States four years ago, I guess my story is not that different from my fellow Cubans’ story about coming in pursuit of better opportunities for a future. I started in photography, as usual, just a hobby, while I’m studying Civil Engineering at FIU and working. Started shooting everything I saw, form animals to places and people. The first opportunity I had as a photographer came from Vedado Social Club when a friend of mine showed some photos I made of my friends to the club manager Juan Shamiso. Started working there from time to time and with time enrolled my self with Shamiso’s support in some big Cuban musicians gigs (Descemer Bueno, Kelvin Ochoa, Raul Paz, Cimafunk). People started calling eventually for family photoshoots, or birthdays and gender reveal, etc. The last job I’m in right now is as an event photographer in Riviera Live. Still have a long road to run, but I feel really happy and enthusiastic.
Has it been a smooth road?
No, it hasn’t. To start with, photography gears are quite expensive, and sometimes the love and the passion for what you do is what drives you to spend more money on one specific item then the pay itself. Time management is also a challenge since I work, study, play the guitar, have a (really supportive) girlfriend and try my best to be in focus with all at once.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
In the beginning, and to be honest, still today, in the great work of photography I still can’t decide what is the kind of job title I should have. Most part of the time I’m an event and live music photographer. I love the way people are when they are not posing, their authentic looks, gestures, faces, when they don’t know I’m around with the camera, then I show them the photos and the actually love it too. From time to time I escape and do some nature shoots or artistic photos of my friends but just for fun.
What have been some of the most important lessons you’ve learned over the course of your career?
Well, if I had known back then what I know today I’d done a lot of things differently. I’d bought the camera I have today from the beginning, I’d focused better on what kind of photography I wanted to make and developed my own style from back then. Also, I’d learned about video art sooner. But I love the way things have been because with the previous knowledge I had before having a camera in my hands for many years (since I was a kid), I don’t imagine myself doing a better work and education.
