Meet Dahlia Canes of The Miami Coalition Against Breed Specific Legislation (MCABSL)

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dahlia Canes. Them and their team share their story with us below:

The Miami “Pit Bull Ban” was enacted in 1989 out of a knee jerk reaction by the sitting Miami Dade County Commissioners to pacify the general public. MCABSL was enacted in 2007 out of the need for its constituents to go to and have answers as to why their dogs were being confiscated by Miami Dade County based on solely visual identification of “alleged” dangerous dog breeds. Since then, it has gone from a grassroots nonprofit organization in the State of Florida to an international force to be reckoned with. We have brought about No Kill Equation Program to MDAS, we have educated and brought about awareness to the general public, politicians/public servants, perform Power Point presentations at universities and schools throughout our nation, involved with media and their perceptions and reporting tactics, we’re involved with animal legislation bills, network with dog rescue organizations, and have even gone to D.C. addressing the issues of Breed Specific Legislation (BSL).

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been a long hard winding road, with decades of legal loopholes and misinformation of facts turned into myths. Ignorance and fear have always been our main obstacles. By means of education and awareness, we have been able to successfully address some of the struggles.

We’ve been impressed with The Miami Coalition Against Breed Specific Legislation (MCABSL), but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are known for fighting Breed Specific Legislation issues, dog fighting, animal cruelty and whatever else comes our way. We are a non-profit org in the State of Florida. We are in the thick of the strongest “Breed Ban” on specific breeds of dogs in the world and successfully facing it day by day. We function solely on donations and volunteers, which include all our Board of Directors and Board of Advisors.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Our prime target is repealing the antiquated “Miami Pit Bull Ban.” We will keep growing and expanding thus reaching out to other places in need of our knowledge, strong force and services. A “Federal Law” prohibiting BSL throughout this country, would be a good start to solve the problem.
