Today we’d like to introduce you to Curry Burns.
Curry, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Well, let me start by talking about my upbringing. I ran away from home when I was eight years of age because of an unstable home after living from couch to couch and at family and friends’ homes. I later walked into a foster home, which cultivated my talents as an athlete. I played sports in high school, which earned me a scholarship to the University of Louisville. After my four years there, I was drafted 7th round in the NFL draft by the Houston Texans. During my five year career, I also played for the NY Giants, Washington Football Team, and the N.O. Saints. After retiring from the Saints, I later finished my grads school degree in Arts and Science.
The truth is, I didn’t really know what to do with myself after retiring from football. It took a long time and a lot of failed attempts at business ventures to realize what I was born to do. I never imagined in my wildest dreams that I would be here; president of my own record label and manager of several artistes and producers. I listen to music all the time as a kid and as a professional for motivation and healing mostly. I had no musical talents the I could think of so how did I get here?
It started with me listening to an artist at my cousin’s house and I was very intrigued. I heard raw emotion and bars with a sort of rhythmic attitude that had me asking who was that. Only to find out that the artist was sitting in the living room with us. At the time, I wanted to invest in something but I just didn’t know what to invest in. I knew nothing about the business at the time so I asked the artist if he had an investor. The artist said no so I wanted to invest but I also knew that I needed to learn the business before I invest in this music business. So I spend six weeks studying and learning from the best in the business (along with YouTube).
After learning what I’ve learned, I quickly registered my company to all necessary sources and I was ready to take the leap. I opened my studio in 2018 and artistes just were pouring in. I truly believe in that notion that “if you build it, they will come.” So shortly after opening my studio, I later taught myself how to engineer, mix and master. I ended up adopting the producer name Chef Curry and my artist name MuurLyfe. I released songs under my artist name for my compilation called “The Streets Want Muur! and it has songs like “Where They At,” “Savage,” “Blindfold,” and more. Since starting my record label in 2018, I release over 20 songs under my label. So now, I use my knowledge to help others that are in need of information or opportunity.
I am also a keynote speaker, as well as a mentor for the youth. I created my non-profit Creative Youth Foundation Inc back in 2013 and I have been hands-on in my community before I started my non-profit. This is the proudest accomplishment I ever achieved in my life. Being able to help those in need and offering services that actually changes their lives moving forward.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
They has been no smooth roads during this process. After losing my brother, I went through a depressed state. I didn’t really know how to move forward from that. That took a lot out of me for me to heal and learn from the pain that it caused. I learned so much about myself that I needed to improve, so I did just that. It took some time but I found healing and a reason to move on. So now I speak to those that might be facing the same dark times I’ve faced in my life. I also ran into some problems when starting my record label. I seen friends and family expose their true intentions after seeing me rise from the mental state I was in. That motivated me even more to accomplish my goals for this company.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I have several companies I am trying to see success in but not far apart from each other. My company TreMuur Music Group, Inc is a record label and it is founded by president Curry Burns back in 2018. I am an engineer, producer, artist, and manager. I specialize in the creation of music and mixing. I am known for bringing songs to life with my mixing and mastering. I am very proud at our growth and that we are doing things the right way by giving all those involved fair and accountable percentages they earned.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I have seen a lot of bad luck in my life so I don’t believe it plays a part. There is always hurdles. What do you do when they arrive. (stop or jump) Whether you clear those hurdles or not. You still have to keep trying. So with that being said, I make my own luck!
