Today we’d like to introduce you to Hinna Akhtar.
Hinna, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am a nurse based in Houston and I’ve released two children’s books about my dog named Lily, who is a real-life hero. The books are inspired by the love and goodness of Lily. The message displays that by doing the right thing, Lily is a hero just as any other child can be. Lily leads by example to the kids that come across their own challenges in life.
I came to the United States in 2002 with a limited background of the American culture. I faced my own challenges of learning English, making new friends, and having the desire for a successful future; nevertheless, I was determined to follow my dreams. From becoming a Sergeant in the US Army to winning the title of a beauty queen as Miss India TX, to finishing my Nursing degree, and finally releasing my published children’s books, I continue to follow my dreams.
My books, “Good Girl or Bad Girl” and “Lily’s Little Friend,” portray a genuine message to the reader. These books connect with the children by understanding that we can all be heroes. When coming across challenging situations, Lily never falls short of her morals. I hopes that through my books, children can be motivated and have the desire to help people just as Lily would. Has it been a smooth road?
I am extremely grateful with all the help and support I have been receiving from everyone. The only struggle has been with the pandemic and everything being shut down, including schools and libraries. Although online marketing has been great and very helpful!

As a Registered Nurse, I’ve always had a heart for children. They are the most precious beings on earth and making children’s books was a way for me to make them happy. I want children to realize that when you do the right thing, you will always be a hero. So, I used Lily as an example because I know that most kids love little dogs! What sets me apart from other authors is that my main character, Lily, is a real-life toy poodle. She leads by example, by being loving, brave, and always doing the right thing.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I believe there will always be room for children’s books anywhere you go. There are always new families developing and children are always needing new books to read. I believe any new author can become successful, especially when starting in a wonderful city like Miami.
