Meet Carlos Matheus of La Latina in Wynwood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carlos Matheus.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I developed this idea about 10 years ago, and it wasn’t until 2010 that I decided to go ahead with the project and executed it. Back in those days, I was doing a MBA and took the chance to work on the idea while in school and make it happen, it took about 2 years to finally open the restaurant.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It hasn’t been a smooth road at all. I had faced many bumps and situations of diverse magnitude, from legal issues, to staff situations, actually some of them have been kind of complex but they have helped to create what it is now.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the La Latina story. Tell us more about the business.
La Latina is Venezuelan restaurant in Miami. We serve simple but delicious authentic Venezuelan food in a casual atmosphere. We opened in a neighborhood that was starting to become hip and where there were not Venezuelan restaurants. We also came with a concept that could be inviting to people from other background other than Venezuelans.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
We work very hard to run the restaurant and keep its quality, however restaurants are a very risky business and I have no doubt we were very lucky the first couple of years when we were trying to create a brand and a name in the city.
