Meet Calvin “Calvin Antonio Miami” Folsom

Today we’d like to introduce you to Calvin “Calvin Antonio Miami” Folsom.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Originally I’m from Overtown, a community in Miami that at one point in time was an epicenter of thriving black businesses in the 60’s. It slowly became an impoverished community after the construction of two major highways. Growing up in the inner city, I wasn’t allowed to hang out with my friends outside of school because of the fear that something would happen to me. So while my friends were hanging out or getting into trouble with the law, I would be at home creating Nike sneaker concepts, making collages out of old Eastbay catalogs and reading tons and tons of Jet, Ebony and Vogue magazines. I would always put my own twists to my outfits. Whether it was to rip a hole in some jeans or even add a couple of patches and embellishments to a varsity jacket, expressing my individuality was important. To be quite honest with you, what really birthed me as a creative influencer on social media is the fact that my creativity stems from a place of pain. There are certain things that I’ve lost and creating brings me peace…I feel closer to God. I don’t want to sound loopy but when I create, I feel like time stands still for a bit.

Please tell us about your art.
I’m a wardrobe stylist that curate looks for both men women. It doesn’t matter your size, shape or ethnicity I have an enormous range of looks that you can choose from and be inspired by. I don’t have a message per se, I really want my work to evoke emotion, to remind you of a particular event, place or time. To remind you of that first kiss, that graduation outfit you wore, that moment you bought your first house, etc.

We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
I would say be normal. The funny things is creatives and artists aren’t that normal at all lol. Honestly, just say Hi. For me personally, if I like your work were friends automatically. I don’t care what you think! Support their work, tell people about them, put all ego aside and build. We’ve been gifted with special abilities, why not use it to uplift each other and our communities?

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
