Meet Brigette Cormier

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brigette Cormier.

Brigette, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I moved to Miami in 2007 to get my BFA in dance at the New World School of the Arts. After I graduated in 2011, I ran an art and dance gallery in Wynwood, where I started Brigette Cormier Dance Company and began producing events. Since then, I’ve been creating art as a professional choreographer; I’ve created commissioned dances for organizations such as Miami Light Project and Miami Theater Center. I’m also a dance and mindfulness educator for all ages; I work with organizations to create programs for their students and clients; depending on the desires of the organization, I create and produce educational programs in ballet, dance, creative movement, Pilates, mindfulness, and meditation. In 2017 I founded Love Steady Lifestyle, a company dedicated to offering life coaching, spiritual services, and educational content for adults interested in delving deeper into their mindfulness practice.

Has it been a smooth road?
To decide to pursue a career in the arts is a commitment that requires a certain amount of discipline to be in a state of constant creation and taking action; in creating the work, applying for the grants, finding the funding, and producing the final product, the amount of energy required to manifest these projects has been very time-consuming. I dedicated the majority of my 20’s to creating and producing a new dance work production every year. When I look back, I realize I left little time for fun; no vacations, no cool trips, and minimal socializing. I was like an art hermit willing to sacrifice my life for my craft. And I kind of did. I had this realization when I turned 30 and noticed that while my artist CV looked nice, I had minimal actual life experience outside of the arts. This impacts how I retrospectively view the true “productivity” of that time in my 20’s and is most likely the reason why I started to creatively burn out as my 30th birthday approached. Now at 31, I consciously set time aside for life-living, and I find that my creativity naturally flows with the most ease when I allow myself to just live without the need to be constantly producing.

For my spiritual business, Love Steady Lifestyle, the challenges were around my self-image and “public image” – I had to constantly ask myself if I was ready to come out of the “spiritual closet” and felt genuine fear of being ostracized by my friends and family to let my perspectives be known. I had been secretly studying and training in mindfulness and meditation for most of my time in Miami; it was like my secret weapon that helped me cope with life. Eventually, my passion for wanting to help people became more important than my fear of what other people thought about me. As soon as I began writing my educational manuscripts and spiritual philosophy content, offering my mindfulness coaching services, giving tarot readings, and leading my group meditation sessions, it felt as if a part of me came alive. It was almost as if a missing piece in my personal self-expression was finally able to fall into place. My family and friends actually supported me 100% (even if they didn’t understand!). I had to face the fears around pushing my comfort zone with my sense of identity; I was always a dance artist and educator and was nervous about expanding my public and professional identity beyond that. I do know I was right to follow my heart with my spiritual business because helping people in such a personal and direct manner has become one of my favorite parts of my life.

We’d love to hear more about your work.

I am passionate, extremely committed to the work, and I truly enjoy what I do. I’ve faced fears and continue to, all while following my heart, and so I’m living a life that feels in alignment with my purpose. It feels good. It feels good to help others, and I’m genuinely happy. An energy of joy, gratitude, and genuine interest influences every facet of the work I do, whether I am functioning as a dance teacher, choreographer, or life coach.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I’ve been in Miami for 13 years and I have zero complaints. My favorite things, besides the obvious things like the weather and nature, is the artistic vibe in this city that facilitates constant inspiration. I’m so grateful for it. The self-expression is everywhere and I love it! This energy of potential, like a kinetic charge that can activate at a moment’s notice fills the air in Miami. Whether it’s a painted mural on a wall or a strew of random graffiti, whether is buskering artists in the street, local artists producing shows, or a full out production in one of our beautiful theaters, I’m in total love with it. I feel at home here, where there is an appreciation for art and people of all interests, which makes room for more art, more inspiration, more beauty, and more fun!
