Today we’d like to introduce you to Bianca Erickson.
Bianca, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was standing in the cosmetics aisle at Whole Foods when my friend Courtney told me about the new goop podcast. Of course, I had heard of goop, and I had listened to a podcast here and there, but I had never really gotten into listening to them before — I wasn’t even sure how or where to find them! I listened to the episode she recommended — it was about hormones and functional medicine — and I was totally inspired to get into the podcasting game.
I’ve found in my life that when something is right for me, it just flows — and so within a very short period of time, I designed a logo, developed a website and taught myself how to record, edit, produce and distribute a podcast! Weeks later, I aired my first episode of The Joyful Hour podcast.
When I was in college, I wanted to be a Social Worker; I’ve also always really liked numbers and been exceptional with details. I found a little niche that satisfied my divergent interests: Epidemiology — the research and science of public health. Equipped with an undergraduate degree in Psychology and a Master’s degree in Epidemiology, I embarked on a 12+ year career as the executive of Women of Tomorrow, a Miami-based non-profit organization focused on inspiring, motivating and empowering at-risk high school girls.
At my core, I am a humanitarian. I have always had a deep desire to help elevate others, and to share what I’ve learned as far as how to be healthy, happy and fulfilled. I believe we are all here for a reason; that we all have a purpose. At this point in time, my purpose is expressed through sharing wellness and personal development inspiration, resources and practical tools through The Joyful Hour.
Has it been a smooth road?
Oh wow, life is a series of challenges, isn’t it? Challenges and obstacles are where the magic lies. Without them, we’d be probably feel pretty bored (and possibly be very boring!). When challenges come up, we get the opportunity to overcome or solve them, and when we do, we get a dopamine hit — making us feel good and propelling us to more positive action.
So, yes, I’ve had my fair share of challenges in bringing The Joyful Hour to life, from technology to podcast editing to time management as a single working mom. However, my biggest challenge has been my inner critic, my own self-limiting beliefs (Who am I to do this? Will people like my content? What do I know about interviewing? What if I make a mistake or a lot of mistakes 🙂 ?). Fortunately, I’ve developed enough self-awareness to notice when those negative beliefs are limiting me or pointing me in the wrong direction and I’ve found ways to help myself move beyond them.
Is there something we can do as a city to improve the outlook for businesses like yours?
Miami is an amazing place for personal development, wellness, mindfulness, meditation, and alternative healing. There is a lot of support and connection for locally based talent and creatives, a growing start-up scene, and a fluid and dynamic environment because of the diversity of the city and its international influences. Positioned on one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, Miami offers an abundance of natural inspiration from the water, to the sun and the trees. For me, it is a place to shine.
