Today we’d like to introduce you to Bethany Detzler.
Bethany, before we jump into specific questions about the company, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As a child, my grandma always had the prettiest nails of any woman I knew. I always wanted nails like hers. One Christmas, she gifted me a caboodle filled with all things pertaining to beauty; nail polishes, press on nails, makeup, you name it. I would go to her house almost every weekend and create press on nails that I wore until I was made to soak them off Sunday nights in preparation for school Monday. I can also remember my mom wearing this frosted pink lipstick that, at the time, was so cool to me. Sometimes she would let me try her makeup out and I can remember how cool I felt when we were doing our makeup together and I got to be like her. That was my introduction to the beauty world. I’m really lucky because my mom and grandma gave me the freedom to experiment at a very young age, which kicks started my passion for cosmetology. From there, my passion grew into my profession. I knew cosmetology was something I wanted to do long term and took the necessary steps to ensure I was well equipped to do so.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Of course not! Being from Michigan and moving to Florida, building my clientele was a huge struggle. Once I moved, balancing a full time job while also having Barbie’s Beauty Room became a struggle as well. I will say one of my biggest challenges thus far has been the internal struggle of wanting to work solely for myself again. Having that full time job as a cushion when I may not have a great month, helps tremendously with especially with being a mother. So I’m faced with doing what’s comfortable or stepping out on faith and allowing my talent to speak for itself.
We’d love to hear more about your company.
Barbies Beauty Room is a luxury beauty company that offers clients a unique nail and makeup experience. If you asked my clients what they love the most about the actual services that I provide, they would say that I’m most known for the way I shape my client’s nails and the custom nail art that I create WITH my clients. My clients instill a certain amount of trust in me to fulfill their needs. They know that I’m going to use the highest quality products on them and educate them about what we are doing each step of the way while working together to bring their vision to life. For their makeup my clients would tell you that they love the natural but glammed and glowing looks I create to enhance their beauty. Each client is also armed with knowledge to take care of their nails, skin, and lashes when they leave. Too many times clients are rushed in and out of salons without being educated on what was used on them or how to care for their look that they just invested in. Now if you ask my clients what they value the most about my services they would tell you it’s the conversations we have and relationships we have formed. The environment I provide allows people to let their guard down and be who they want to be. We laugh, cry, joke and encourage each other. It’s therapeutic. Confidence is key in my salon! When someone leaves my space, I want them to feel just as dope and confident on the inside as the outside looks! That is what sets me apart!
What were you like growing up?
I was always artsy or creative (whatever the cool kids are calling it lol). I was a free spirit and a social butterfly. I loved talking to my friends and meeting new people. I went to several schools as a kid and was the new kid a lot. I had to learn to talk to people and build relationships. Looking back I appreciate this so much because it taught me to put my self out there. It exposed me to so many different people of all walks of life and you know what I learned? People are people and everyone deserves to be embraced for who they are. I’m so thankful and blessed for those who embraced me as the new kid and let me be me. Some are still in my “village” today, cheering me along and I love them for that.
