Meet Ana Lozano of Piece-by-Piece Behavioral Therapy in Kendall

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ana Lozano.

Ana, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Hi, my name is Ana Lozano! At a very young age, I always knew I wanted to work with children. I spent many of my teen years volunteering in summer camps and after school care programs. My ABA journey began in 2013 when a friend of mine suggested I accompany her to an Autism Speaks Walk with her company. Soon after the walk, she asked me if I would be interested in working at an ABA agency with children with developmental disabilities and the rest was history. I started working in the field and I immediately loved it! I decided to pursue a Bachelor’s in Psychology and then a Master’s in Applied Behavior Analysis with a concentration in Autism.

During and post-graduation, I gained hands-on experience by working directly with clients, supervising therapists and training parents and teachers. Having worked in various agencies, I found myself wanting to do more for the community by applying my knowledge and passion and opening my own agency. My biggest question was, when? When was I going to make that move? I kept telling myself 2021 was going to be the year. When the pandemic began, I caught myself thinking, why not now? I thought, you know what, let me take this opportunity and go for it. So, I did! I believed in myself and took that leap!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Not at all! It definitely has not been a smooth road and I know challenges will continue to present themselves. I take these challenges as learning opportunities and room for growth. I spent the majority of my 20’s going to school full time and working 30-35 hours a week implementing 1:1 ABA therapy. All I knew was the clinical side of ABA. Transitioning from a Behavior Analyst to a Founder/Business Owner was mind-boggling, especially during a pandemic!

As a business owner, you never stop learning and it’s important to stay current in every aspect of the industry. There were many sleepless nights as I dove into the unknown of Covid-19, insurance companies and the human resources world but I am grateful for my mentors and the resources I have discovered along the way. Nothing in life comes easy and the competitive side in me is always up for a good challenge!

Please tell us about Piece-by-Piece Behavioral Therapy.
Piece-by-Piece Behavioral Therapy (PBP) provides Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), which is a type of therapy based on the science of learning and behavior. We specialize in working with children with Autism, ADD/ADHD, developmental delays and those that exhibit challenging behaviors. PBP’s sole focus is to improve the quality of lives of children and their families. Using behavioral principles, we work on increasing language/communication skills, functional living skills and social skills while simultaneously decreasing problem behaviors.

We also provide shadowing services for any child that needs additional support in the classroom, parent training to support parents and teach them how to implement behavior strategies and tutoring services for any child who is struggling with academics. Our services are provided across multiple settings such as the home, school and community throughout Miami, Florida in both English and Spanish.

I have met many wonderful families and I have seen firsthand the struggle parents go through for their little ones. One of the main reasons why I decided to open PBP is to continue to provide support and guidance to parents and their children. I want to make sure that I am present when a child receives a diagnosis, through their learning journey and ultimately make a meaningful impact in their lives.

What were you like growing up?
My family and I are Nicaraguan and Cuban. Growing up, I was outgoing, honest, loyal, fun and always “inventing something” like my parents always say. I enjoyed and still enjoy outdoor activities, watching sports, dancing and I am a huge TV/movie junkie. At a young age, I realized that I genuinely enjoy helping others, whether it’s a pep talk, teaching someone or just lending a hand whenever necessary.
