Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexa Carlin.
Nationally renowned motivational speaker, Alexa has dedicated her life to doing one thing: inspiring people to dream big and believe in themselves.
She founded her first company while in high school where she donated a percentage of proceeds to help build schools in Africa. Since then, she has been passionate about making a difference in others lives and in the world. In 2011, she founded the inspirational blog Hello Perfect®, with the mission to promote self-love in girls and women. Her most recent entrepreneurial endeavor is the Women Empower Expo which became the largest event for women entrepreneurs in South Florida in its first year in 2016. In 2017 she has expanded the business to hosting two events in Fort Lauderdale and Washington DC already impacting over 6,000 people who have attended her events live.
In college, her life changed forever. A few months before graduation she fell ill suddenly and her body went into Septic Shock. She was induced into a medical coma given a one percent chance of living. This life-changing experience inspired her to share her story authentically to positively impact the lives of others.
In December 2014 she published “The Simple Gluten-Free Vegan Cookbook”, a recipe guide of healing plant-based recipes to help others incorporate more plant-based meals into their diet and become healthier, from the inside out. Genuine by nature, caring at heart: for Alexa, this is merely the tip of the iceberg. Her passionate yet entertaining style and message speaks to all ages at their own level, helping them understand the true potential they hold.
“It is the choices we make in life that determine who we are going to be. Listen to your heart, be guided by your intuition, and know that at any moment you have the opportunity to change your life.” Her stories connect. Her lessons inspire. Best of all- Alexa’s words stick. Today, Alexa resides in South Florida amongst her family and friends who inspire her daily. She is active on social media and has speaks frequently in her community as well as throughout the country as a sought after leader for women. When not speaking onstage, Alexa can be found writing her next book, creating events for the Women Empower Expo, or playing with her toy poodle, Nala.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Heck no! Entrepreneurship is never a smooth road but that’s what makes it fun! Its also what differentiates the people who achieve success.
I’ve had a lot of struggles on this road towards my dreams but the hardest one has been the fight with my autoimmune disease. Its a daily struggle of not knowing when I’m going to feel good or when its a day I have to cancel all of my meetings and plans because I’m too sick to leave the house. It’s extremely difficult, especially since I’m working to grow and expand my company which requires a ton of energy and focus.
What I’ve done is work to take one step at a time and accept that this autoimmune disease is part of me, but it does not define me. We always tend to compare our journey to someone else’s but the truth is, we are all going through different experiences to help us become who we are supposed to be in life.
While its an ongoing struggle with my health, I now see my autoimmune disease as a blessing because its given me a unique perspective on everything and it also has allowed me to help and inspire thousands of people by just finding the courage to be vulnerable and share what I’m going through.
Please tell us about Women Empower Expo.
The Women Empower Expo has a mission to empower women with the knowledge and community to create positive change in their personal and professional lives. We do this through our yearly events in select cities where we bring together 2,000+ women, 50+ speakers, 70+ local and woman-owned businesses, and unique activations for a one-of-a-kind experience all geared towards empowering women.
We focus on the entrepreneurially minded women- the person who is passionate and determined to turn their ideas into reality.
Our company differentiates itself through 3 avenues making the WEX experience truly unique in that our events are affordable, attract a wide range of ages and industries, and is customized to each attendee. Our program is designed so each attendee can choose to participate in the sessions and activations that they are most passionate about.
What makes me the most proud though about my company, is the fact that it is truly a grassroots movement. Our first year we had 2,000 women in attendance and I spent less than $100 in advertising. WEX is needed now more than ever and our community is helping us grow it to make a difference in thousands of women’s lives across the country.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Nothing! Every failure, every setback, every mistake is what has led me to this very moment.
