Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Planes.
Alex, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I moved to south Florida in 2014 while working as a writer and financial analyst for The Motley Fool. I wrote over 3,000 articles from 2011-2015 and my work was featured in USA Today, Fox Business, Yahoo, AOL Daily Finance, and other outlets, in addition to its regular placement in Motley Fool publications. In 2015 I created HSTL Modular, which marketed and sold portable buildings throughout the United States. My marketing and branding work for that company led me to create FoundEdge, a dedicated marketing and business development agency with a focus on digital channels.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Any entrepreneur who tells you they’ve had an easy path to success is lying. Building a business — especially if it’s your first time, and especially if you’re working with a co-founder — is a constant learning process, which often costs more money than a college degree and creates more stress than a bad marriage. I would never recommend a 50/50 partnership to anyone looking to go into business with a cofounder. Without clear lines of authority and a well-defined chain of command it can be all too easy for progress to stall out and for small issues to become major threats to your business. You can learn new systems and processes, and find funding in most cases when you really need it, but if you can’t resolve differences with someone who controls just as much of your company as you do, then you won’t have a company for much longer.

At FoundEdge, our motto is “empowering entrepreneurs.” We do this by taking care of the tasks that are essential to compliant and successful business operation, but which are not very interesting to most business owners — things like filing paperwork with state and federal authorities, taking care of the accounting and payroll, creating documents and proposals, designing websites and brand assets, launching ad campaigns, and even outsourcing sales or customer support tasks.
Our goal is to take care of the day-to-day necessities so that entrepreneurs and their teams can be freed to focus on the big picture of growing their businesses. Every service we offer is data-driven and results-oriented, from our conversion-focused websites to our highly-trained outsourced sales team, in which every rep is thoroughly immersed in the business they’re supporting until they become almost a part of that company’s team.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My goal at FoundEdge is to keep growing and to be able to help more entrepreneurs solve more problems in their businesses, month after month, year after year. I don’t plan for any big changes, but every business has to adapt, so I’m sure things will change down the line.
Over the long term, I would like to open international offices to better support my global team and provide better service to clients around the world. I’d also like to open a bed and breakfast in the Caribbean somewhere, but that’s more of a personal retirement goal than a professional ambition…
