Meet Alex Heiche of Sound Royalties in West Palm Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Heiche.

Alex, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I always say that music wasn’t my first language, but it was and is my first love. Growing up, I was trained as a classical pianist, which is where my passion for music was born. But I eventually realized that while I could condition myself to mechanically play the pieces, and while it may have sounded great to most, I knew the instruments I played weren’t ‘speaking’ the way they do for people with innate musical talent.

At that time, the computer industry was recruiting people with musical backgrounds because the way a musician’s brain is wired is actually very compatible with software creation. I spent some time in the computer and software industries and then began working in specialty financing. However, I always knew that I wanted to get back to the music industry.

I began to notice a huge service gap in the music industry that was leaving songwriters, artists and producers with few attractive funding options. If they needed money today to launch a new project, their only real option was to sell away their copyrights forever – which did not sit well with me as an advocate for those who create music. The industry had been shaped like this for decades, yet it seemed like no one wanted to do anything to change or improve it.

This led to the creation of Sound Royalties, where I finally had the opportunity to combine my skillset, passion for music and compassion for the people that create it.

Today, Sound Royalties has revolutionized the entire music finance industry by providing personalized specialty financing and access to cash for music professionals. Our unique and innovative program gives artists financial and creative freedom so that they can focus on the music.

Has it been a smooth road?
When I started researching the finance options for creatives, I was surprised to find that the finance and music industries didn’t have the best relationship. Many companies were operating under a pawn shop model where they would provide an advance, but their hope was to ultimately acquire the copyrights for themselves.

Given this unfortunate history of music finance space, Sound Royalties was often viewed as “too good to be true.”

It’s taken some time for the industry to realize that we operate very differently than existing companies who take advantage of the system and the needs of music professionals. In contrast to those businesses, Sound Royalties operates under a creative-friendly professional banking model. We do not buy copyrights or own them, not even in the rare instance of default.

Legitimizing our work in a space that has traditionally been tilted in favor of the finance companies has certainly been a challenge, but the industry has begun to realize that Sound Royalties truly wants to help and advocate for the music professionals, rather than swindling away their rights.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Sound Royalties – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Sound Royalties is an innovative company transforming the way music professionals fund their creativity. We provide special financing options for songwriters, producers, artists, and publishers while making sure that creatives have the money they need so that nothing gets in the way of their music. More recently, we became the first to start funding labels and publishers, in order to help them bring more new music to the world.

Unlike traditional banks or lenders, our advances are non-credit based, which is often an issue for musicians who experience a natural ebb and flow in their incomes. And far different from the industry’s typical options, which forced creatives to permanently sell the rights to their music, Sound Royalties offers advances based on future earnings while allowing artists to retain rights to their music. We don’t seek to buy copyrights and we don’t even get them in default.

Our deals are based around the unique needs of the music world, and each individual client. We understand how their income works and can offer customized deals that provide access to cash quickly, with a process that’s simple and transparent. Our clients can even receive overflow income if they earn more than the transaction is expected to recoup – an extreme rarity in this industry.

Sound Royalties is a company run by music people for music people. We have worked with a wide range of leading music industry professionals in every genre. While relationships with Sound Royalties can remain private and confidential, many of our clients are happy to share their experiences, including Lil’ Wayne, Rich Robinson of The Black Crowes, and many industry-leading songwriters and producers.

What role has luck (good luck or bad luck) played in your life and business?
Luck has played a major role in my life. But I should clarify that I define luck as an opportunity for meeting the right skill set. Still, many people with exceptional talents and skills never get the right opportunity, while all too often those without the proper skill sets may receive opportunities which they can’t capitalize on.

I feel fortunate that when the opportunities presented themselves, I had the skills to match. And I’m extremely grateful that I was able to create a company which not only blends my skills and passion but also allows me to provide a unique, valuable service to the music industry that’s so close to my heart.

Sound Royalties, on the other hand, has not been built on luck, but rather, on good old-fashioned ingenuity and hard work. We identified a gaping need in a major industry and created a mutually-advantageous solution to it. We built out the right team of professionals who know the music business and how it works, and can thus provide unparalleled service to music professionals that are changing the industry for the better.
