Meet Alex Dixon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Dixon.

Alex, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My entire life, I only played soccer. I didn’t really have an interest in anything else or doing anything else professionally. I went to school on scholarship, playing ball and made friends there. One day we went to a 90s themed party and we were dapper down in 90s themed clothing but the party was lame so we just stayed outside and took iPhone photos. I was the one taking most of the pictures, and one of my dawgs was like “yo these pictures are fire bro you should be a photographer”, he didn’t mean it for real or anything and he never said it after that. But I kept thinking about it and then that summer I took him seriously and bought a camera. Ever since then, I’ve loved taking photos and have become known as a photographer.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It hasn’t been smooth but it hasn’t really been bumpy either. I’d say my biggest obstacle is being completely new to the whole world of creatives cuz I started two years ago. I’ve never had to struggle with paying for bills, thank god and my parents are blessed enough to basically fund my career. The hardest thing for me was learning to network and meet people cuz I never used to like talking to new people. Learning to take photos that I liked was a big learning curve for me too. I shoot a lot of concerts and you can’t just walk into them with a camera, you usually have to go through a magazine. So getting a magazine to let me join their team was the hardest part. Even now I think the hardest thing is for me to meet people who I think can put me in a better position to succeed.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I’m a photographer. I do video too but I am known best for my photos. I do a lot of events like concerts mainly, but I do a lot of nightlife and portraits as well. What I’m proud of most is my growth; however, corny that probably sounds. I’ll look back at the photos I was taking at first and think yo that photo is trash. How did that meet your standards back then? I guess what sets me apart from others is my niceness, a lot of photographers don’t really like to teach others but I have no problem doing it. I like to make friends with people.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I’ll give some shoutouts to YouTube, that’s basically free school for anything you wanna learn. But a real shoutout to Buddha (formerly known as @shotbynfl but now known as @kwamilee) cuz I met him once and I saw his drive and hustler mindset. He carried himself in a way that I’d like to. My dawg Laz @Lazneto cuz he’s a really good photographer and he’s taught me how to be a people person in this photo game and not just a photographer. He’s reminded me it’s about fun too and you should befriend those you meet, which makes networking easier. I have another friend Bryson, he’s not a photographer but the kind of person he is, is the person who can just set their mind to something and do it. It doesn’t matter how he gets to his solution but he always does. No matter his situation. On top of that he can become friends with anyone, but not the friend who will just be a hi and bye, he will be a lasting friend who you’d wanna visit if y’all didn’t live in the same city. It’s hard to explain but I hope I did a good job.
