Meet Alessandra Calderín of Boneseed

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alessandra Calderín.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Alessandra. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I grew up in Miami and as a kid, I was equal parts magic and logic (thank you Capricorn sun
+ Pisces moon). I practiced yoga early and had an extremely active imagination, but I also loved microscopes and animals and math. As I grew older, however, the magical parts started to fade and were replaced with a need to achieve under a model of success that wasn’t mine. The best parts of me withered as I did things for the sake of other people’s approval.

This pattern continued until I was 25, living in New York, making very good money for the first time, and totally miserable. I had found success and felt like an empty husk of a person. I was still practicing yoga, going out, contributing at work (I was a recruiter at the time), but I hated myself. And I drank a lot to deal with it. And I had a lot of issues with men. Finally, I decided to ask for help.

I started seeing a therapist with whom I came to terms with a lengthy history of sexual harassment and assault. I found a yoga teacher who eventually became my mentor. I started taking improv classes for anxiety and depression and because I had always loved to perform as a kid. I accepted and acknowledged my bisexuality. After a few months, things started to get better, but every afternoon, I would still lay on the floor with my friends in reception, hiding from everything. One day, one of them recommended I book a tarot reading with their friend.

I rolled my eyes but figured since I was so desperate to feel anything different, I might as well give it a try. Enter the tarot, and everything changed. After a reading that brought me to tears, I started studying the cards which blew the lid open for me. I found a mentor and learned how to connect with my intuition and the archetypal nature of the cards. Meanwhile, my yoga mentor invited me to an advanced training reserved for teachers on the chakra system and the subtle body.

Finally, I was connecting with things I was naturally attuned with. After three years of recruiting, I had saved enough money to jump ship and start Boneseed, a practice that focuses on diving into the deepest layers of the authentic Self and shares that originality and energy with the world. I deepened my study by gaining certifications on the pelvic floor, group fitness, Reiki attunement and every day I learned more about how to be myself.

Meanwhile, I was writing consistently again and performing more. I even produced and hosted my own variety show, Sex Magic: A Taboo Busting, Sex Positive, Magic Making event over the course of 2018. All I wanted to do was share all the things I have learned and continue to excavate and expand, which is how I began my mentorship and coaching program, Excavation and Expansion, under the guidance of my own mentor.

I was finally experiencing joy, fulfillment, and growth, but something was missing. So, deciding I missed my family too much to keep this up in NYC, I decided to bring the magic home and recently returned to Miami. I’m currently seeing Skype clients and partnering with hotels and healing spaces to bring my workshops and practices to the people the are looking for something more. I’ve been teaching yoga, meditation, slinging cards and can’t wait to provide this medicine to more people.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Finding the balance between intuition and logic, feminine and masculine energy, the unseen and seen is the main challenge I tackle both with my clients and my own practice. I love working with people, but promoting my work is challenging. I’ve slowly learned that if I believe in what I do, promoting it is part of the gift I’m giving. How can I help people if they don’t know what I’m doing or how I can help them? But I never want to seem pushy.

My first year in business I made less than $6000. I had prepared for that and saved enough money to invest in myself, but it was scary to not be adding to my savings account and to be taking such a risk when I had such a stable job before this. The doubts creep in constantly. Is this worth it? Are you good enough? What do you really have to offer anyways? But I had people who believed in me and encouraged me and it made all the difference. This is my third year running as Boneseed and things are looking very different. It’s amazing to watch things grow.

The final challenge is balance and focus. With so many passions and side projects, I can get a little overwhelmed, but I’ve found a way for them to work for instead of against each other. My creative work and my healing work fuel each other. They allow me to make connections and come up with an endless array of workshops to share. However, when you work for yourself, there is no one over your shoulder saying, “I need this done by the end of the week.” It’s all you. Sometimes, that flexibility is freeing and different projects get the space they need, sometimes you can binge watch a show and the only consequence is your own guilt (which luckily for me is very effective). Finding a process that works for you is key.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Boneseed – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I’m a teacher, healer and creative focusing on the sacral chakra which is the center of sexuality and creativity. The practices encompassed through Boneseed explore creative authenticity and sensual connection both physically through the pelvic floor and a yoga asana practice as well as emotionally and mentally through tarot, meditation, and artistic expression.

Excavation + Expansion is a mentorship and coaching program through which my clients have found a sense of deeper connections to themselves and the world around them. We spend so much time listening to the “rules” other people have made for us, we rarely listen to ourselves. It’s been a gift to help people create the conditions for their own versions of health and happiness and success.

I also work with folks on connecting physically and emotionally to the pelvic floor. Many of us are numb to our pelvic floor. From a weakened core to sexual disassociation, a sexually obsessed and repressed culture has complicated our relationship to the very core of our human bodies and the source of life. This practice can offer physical relief from endometriosis, incontinence, vaginismus, pelvic dysfunction, etc or emotional relief and reconnection for stronger orgasms, enhanced libido or stamina. For more serious cases, it’s an excellent supplement to physical therapy with a licensed practitioner.

Then, there’s my yoga and tarot practices which have to lead to a range of workshops from Tarot for Sexual Empowerment to Yoga for the Sacral Chakra. Most recently I combined Tarot and the Chakra system for a powerful meditative practice called Archetypal Embodiment.

As an empath and a performer, I’m able to create an environment that feels safe and fun. From fitness classes to readings to events and the aforementioned Sex Magic show, my greatest gift is creating a space that allows you to do your own healing. We are all powerful, dynamic and intuitive. It’s been an honor to help people see that within themselves.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Everything and nothing. Sometimes I think I should have stuck it out in corporate life for one more year, or I should have taken a different training, or I should have studied something else in college. In reality, everything taught me something that makes this all possible. Had I not been sexually assaulted, there are certain parts of this practice that would be difficult to help other people with. If I hadn’t slipped into the darkness, I wouldn’t know how to climb like my life depended on it. Every moment of difficulty was an opportunity to get better and learn.
