Today we’d like to introduce you to Adrian Archie.
Adrian, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have a beautiful wife of ten years who is a lawyer as a 14-year-old daughter and a three-month-old daughter. I grew up in Concord North Carolina. My childhood and early adult years were consumed with football as I started playing when I was six years old. I received and full athletic scholarship to the University of Richmond. In addition to football, I also had a strong affinity to animals. I had every type of pet you can name growing up and I also started a goal of becoming a veterinarian around that period in my childhood.
I started as a Pre-Veterinary Major at the University of Richmond but decided to switch to Psychology in my junior year. After college, I continued my football career playing two years in the CFL for the Montreal Allouettes. I briefly spent time in the NFL with the Atlanta Falcons in 2005 before being released by the team and I stop pursuing pro football and embarked on a more traditional career in corporate America. I briefly sold pharmaceuticals after football was over before breaking into the medical device industry. I spent almost a decade in the medical device industry selling surgical devices for Brain and Spine Surgery primarily. I was a rep in the Washington DC area before moving to South Florida and selling in the same capacity.
Before I left the industry my role was that of Global Brand Manager for the same products I once sold and I managed over $25,000,0000 in sales and launched multiple new products. However, I wanted to get back to my passion which was animals. So I left corporate America and became an entrepreneur. My competitive background, matched with my science and animal experience, combined with the business skills I gathered in the fast-paced medical device industry prepared me to excel in my current entrepreneurial endeavors. I have accomplished some really cool goals in my 39 years but even through all of the wins, I have experienced some lows. I have learned that with faith and consistency everything works out for the good.
Has it been a smooth road?
Absolutely has not been a smooth road. I grew up in a single mother household so the odds were immediately stacked against me. My mother was a superstar and still is, but having no father to emulate or learn from never slowed me down though it definitely would have helped my maturation. My college football coach and program was old school. We worked very hard and were expected to not just do everything right, but do it 5 minutes early. That period of my life as a college football player was tough because of that, but I look back on that hardship and realize that I am who I am today because of it.
I also struggled to achieve my dream of playing pro football. I was fortunate enough to play in the CFL and NFL for three years combined but I never really got a real chance to play to my potential so looking back on that the dream was incomplete. The process of making teams and trying out was grueling mentally and physically but that also contributed to my character. I had a very successful career in medical devices, however, the ending was not pleasant. The situation left a sour taste in my mouth and was the reason why I decided to resign and move on. I left a very high paying role and fulfilling career for the unknown. It sounds simple talking about it five years later but in reality, it hurt, I went through a period of depression all while going through a rough year or two trying figure out how to get this entrepreneurial thing off the ground. I will not even go into depth on how hard it is to start and run a successful business. I was never funded adequately in the first place so everything that we have has been gained and sustained with hard work, consistency, and faith.
The business and experiences so far are a blessing yet it definitely has been a bumpy and challenging road getting to this point, though I realize that all we’re required to prepare me to operate in this moment. Out of what I see as a tragedy in my life, resigning from a career I loved and was good at, sprouted a business that I never imagined. The sky is the limit from here and I am well aware of that. I simply remain humble, empathetic, hard-working, and consistent day to day towards the goals I was created to achieve.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the petNmind Naturals & Self-Wash story. Tell us more about the business.
petNmind is a five-year-old All-Natural and Holistic Pet Supply Company. We live by the slogan “Healthy Pet, Healthy You” because we truly believe that pets and people share a mutually beneficial relationship. However, that relationship can not be as special as it possibly can be if either the animal or the human is not healthy. We specialize in quality pet nutrition and we also offer do it yourself dog washing services as well as nutrition consulting and meal plans for dogs and cats. We carry raw dehydrated, freeze-dried, as well as more traditional forms of pet food. Believe it or not, most pet food brands, especially the most popular ones, are full of junk and honestly should not be fed to our pets.
Pet food is the largest contributing factor to why most people take their pets to the vet, though most have no clue. An even larger issue is nutrition is not a huge part of vet medicine so nutrition is rarely incorporated into the treatment plan. However we have seen first hand over the years how quality and appropriate nutrition not only heals most issues pets experience, but they also thrive long-term when fed properly. The biggest problem is most pet parents are not aware of the issues pet food presents and there are very few venues for them to go to get pertinent information relating to pet nutrition and holistic approaches to pet health. Not only is their a lack of information and guidance but most pet stores, grocery, and big-box stores only sell bad food. That is where we step in. We carry the best products that are not widely available, however, our customers report that they trust us and recommend us because of the information we are able to offer and the results they get from it. Basically, our customers are empowered and their pets are healthier. You will not find the products we sell in many places, and you certainly will not find the experience we provide anywhere else.
We also deliver and are one of the few pets stores in the area to do so. We also offer self-serve dog wash services as well as non-anesthetic dental cleaning for pets as well. Lastly, we offer nutritional planning and consulting services as well for dogs and cats.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The pet industry is one of the few industries that always grow no matter the state of the economy. As a matter of fact, the pet industry grew during the last recession. As I said before people and pets have a real bond, therefore pets are always at the top of the list even when times are not so good. The industry is expected to grow in the double digits through the 2020s. Even more promising is biggest and fastest growth in the industry is and will continue to be experienced within the “natural” space.
As pet parents humanize their pets more and more the demand for high-quality products will continue to soar. Pet services like dog washing and boarding to name just two are also expected to be a growth leader in the pet category too. The industry is poised to grow and we are excited because we are positioned at the tip of that growth and petNmind will be a leader in shaping the pet humanization movement for years to come.
