Featured Resident Artist Winter Exhibition & during Art Basel Miami 2015 at Gallery 212 Miami in Wynwood :: October, 2015 – February, 2016

Born in the Russian city of Chita by the majestic Baikal Lake, Maria was a very active and curious child who showed interest in many aspects of art – drawing, sculpting and more -from an early age. She always loved bright colors and tried to use them as much as possible.

In 1994 her parents moved to Moscow where she attended school and enrolled in her very first drawing and painting classes. She began to frequent museums and discovered her passion for travel abroad around this time.

In 10th grade she started studying web design and finally decided to tie her life in with design and art. She also enrolled in extracurricular courses in interior design and eventually enrolled in the Moscow State University of Geodesy and Cartography where she studied Art and Design. In her first year she won a project for decorating one of the galleries with stained glass. During her studies Maria took the greatest interest in the theory of colors alongside drawing, painting, sculpture and computer science with applications in design.

The artist began to develop professionally in drawing and painting now with oils as well as increasing her awareness and familiarity with a number of famed designers and artists. She began apprenticeships in several galleries while continuing her studies and working in a graphic design studio.

She graduated in 2009 with her Master’s Degree and several successful exhibitions behind her. She worked in Sochi, Russia on the design of a restaurant and exhibited her work in one of Sochi’s premiere galleries. Following exhibitions took place in both St. Petersburg and Moscow.

Having a successful career in art and design, Maria travels around the globe soaking up inspiration and gaining experience. During one of her voyages she fell in love with Miami and has decided to settle here for a while to share her art and experiences with the people of this wonderful city.

“In my personal life, it is very important to have relationships between beauty, style and comfort… and to see this relationship gracefully reveal itself.”

In art, she believes that beauty is a positive force and that the main focus is to form an idea that captures this and brings the force to life. The creation will, in turn bring out freedom, style, beauty and comfort.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My way into the world of creativity began easily from an early age when I learned to hold pencils in my hand and draw. I remember my mother began to give me to color and draw pictures, and we are with her every day, drawing and coloring. Already at that age, I liked bright colors. Then I liked to make different handicrafts and model with clay, collect the construction set. During my school years, I went to various creative circles and developed my creativity. Somewhere in grade 7, I decided that I would become a designer and create beautiful works of art. Parents supported me in the beginning of my creative path, I want to thank them for their support. So in grade 11 I entered the interior design course and then entered university as a designer. During my studies, I have studied many subjects in design, which gave me the opportunity to realize my ideas to date at university, I have studied for six years. Today I thank all the teachers who were involved in my education. During training at university I had the opportunity to meet the wonderful artists Larissa Dmitrievna and Maria Kulagina. Talented and wonderful teachers have taught me how to draw and feel the color in drawing and painting, they have made a great contribution to the development of my art. When I graduated from university, I started working as an interior designer, creating beautiful interior spaces and at the same time painting. My creativity was fueled by my travels around the world, where I always find ideas and absorb great energy for my works and paintings.

In 2015, I participated for the first time in the global Art Basel exhibition in Miami. The paintings were on display at Gallery 212, the gallery of talented artist Michael Perez in downtown Wynwood. While walking around Wynwood, I stopped by to see the gallery and there I met this wonderful and talented man and artist who suggested I exhibit paintings in the gallery at Art Basel in Miami. I want to thank Michael Perez from the bottom of my heart for this opportunity and support to show my art to people. But unfortunately a little later, this beautiful man’s health a bit failed and he could not create and had to close the gallery, but in the process he was supported by no less talented son Jason Perez, who continued the family way of art and professional activities by creating Jason Perez Art Collective, to date the team includes many talented artists and artists, who are represented in Miami.

This year I participate in the two world’s largest exhibitions Art Bazel in Miami and Zurich, where I will present my vision of space in this world in the form of paintings filled with bright figures and colors on canvases.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My life is completely connected to creativity, where I create around spaces, both in my profession and hobby, drawing pictures. When I graduated with a degree in design, I started working as an interior designer. I was invited to work in a studio where I started as an interior designer and to this day I have been creating spaces and filling them with bright details in the interior, creating an easy-going atmosphere where one can live and stay for a long time. Most of all I am proud of my individuality, creativity and ideas that are expressed in different directions of my life. To feel and contemplate life and the world in small details, to draw inspiration from them, to create works of art from them, to gather these pieces and create – a picture.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I see my future in creating a free space for people to freely express their ideas. In the near and future, I will create my own gallery, for the time being I am creating an idea and looking for a place to implement the conceived project called ARTFACEGALLERY.
