Life & Work with Angie Mejia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angie Mejia.

Hi Angie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Since I was a child, I had always been into making art, collages, designing, and painting. Before I started taking pictures, I used to create ceramic pieces and amateur paintings in high school. It was one of my favorite things to do, my past time consisted of editing weird videos, using photoshop and cutting up magazines. I had always participated in my friend’s art and photos, I modeled for their pictures as they were learning in their own photography journey. After high school, I had stopped doing a lot of the things that made me happy, I felt quite empty and with no purpose as I went through my first years of college filled with the fast typical life of partying in Miami and doing school work. I had gone to California for the first time in 2019 and picked up a disposable fuji film camera and fell in love with being the one behind the camera. I kept albums full of photos I had taken with disposable cameras…since then, it’s been history. I started to create more art and photos with intention and more detail. I enjoyed the excitement of waiting for photos and experimenting. I have met so many amazing people who inspire me and respect me so much.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t think anything you do in life is ever a smooth road. If the only way was easy then we would never learn how to get up after we fall. Sometimes there are days, even months, where I cannot get out of bed and have the motivation to do something elaborate and amazing. Honestly, I believe a lot of creatives can relate to that. We have to sit down and do nothing sometimes. On a different note, there are times where people do not respect your artwork and time, so they can try to use you for their own good. I am too nice sometimes and let people take advantage, but as I’ve gotten more experienced, I realized my worth and that the way people can treat you is a reflection of themselves. It has taken a lot to try to create boundaries and let people know that.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a portrait editorial photographer, stylist, and creative assistant at KIKI. I specialize in taking editorial style photography.

KIKI is a luxury womenswear brand I work for as a photographer, director, and media marketer. I have been so grateful for the opportunity of being able to turn that internship into my job. I have learned so much and I am still learning a lot more from my mentor and owner of the brand, Kiana. That is something I am most proud of myself. I feel happy being able to do something I love and what I learned about in school as my major is Marketing in Business.

My style is very feminine yet edgy in some sort. I love using bright colors, architecture, vintage fashion, lingerie, and sun. I grew up my whole life in Little Havana so I find a lot of comfort in shooting over there and making some pieces feel familiar than cookie-cutter clean. I am not very sure what I am known for, but I believe it would have to do with the photoshoots I do with my best friend Zienelle. Our chemistry is unmatched when we create together, and I find myself constantly amazed at how we inspire each other and understand what we both want from a project. I do not know what sets me apart from others, I feel like when I shoot femmes, it translates so well in my photos that people recognize it and often bring up those photos. You can feel the comfort and openness between the subject and I.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I would say that my loyalty to others plays a big role in why people trust me so much, which leads to business opportunities and good symbiotic relationships. I have been only working in photography for about three years coming up and having drive has helped me so much as well.
