Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Fox.
Melissa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
When I first moved to Miami nine years ago, I had five jobs trying to make it as an aesthetician. Hotels, mobile services, on-call positions, applying for every job posting that has to do with what I love.
I applied to an anonymous ad on Craigslist and was called in for an interview, only to be seated in front of a world-renowned dermatologist, Dr. Brandt. He hired me on the spot and I instantly thought of how my career changed in that instant.
When he passed, I stayed a year at the new practice that had taken over. I grew emotionally, had gotten stronger mentally, and was so grateful to Skin Associates of South Florida for all of their support, especially when I decided to go off on my own. I wasn’t looking for it. I woke up one day and decided to jump. I found a suite that day to rent and resigned the next day.
After three years of being on my own, I am now “jumping” again… opening a bigger practice with a goal in mind to bring the best beauty professionals in Miami under one roof.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As they say, nothing good comes easy. Putting in the time and energy for a business takes away from personal life, which I think is the hardest balance to achieve. As a business owner, you think you need to work double, just in case the next month isn’t good money making a month.
My advice for women who are just starting their journey is to do what scares you. Taking a risk is a big deal, but the fulfillment you get when you see your vision come to life… there’s nothing more rewarding.
Please tell us about Flawless by Melissa Fox.
My office is strictly facials and skincare. We offer so many different facials and add ons, customizing for each individual guest. We try to never give the same facial twice to a guest, I believe in constantly tricking the skin to keep seeing results.
Of course, we love the glowy hydration facials, but what we are most proud of is our acne clinic. Walking each client through the process to clear their acne is a gift, and then when we see them totally clear without medications, its the gift that keeps on giving!
There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that a lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
A mentor can be anyone that’s positive and supportive of your journey. I feel I have a whole lot of them! Every hour, I’m lucky to be able to experience new energy in a person with a positive remark to shape my day…
