Today we’d like to introduce you to Anthony Joshua.
Hi Anthony, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always had an interest in understanding why people are the way they are and why they do the things they do. Growing up in the inner city of Hartford, CT I realized how important access to resources were and the impact access has on the trajectory of one’s life, for better or for worse. This interest and understanding resulted in me studying Psychology and Human Services during my undergraduate years. After losing a very close friend to complications with HIV/AIDS, my life as I knew it would never be the same. My friend was studying Social Work, and her death was the catalyst to the next chapter of my life. I began my journey as a Social Worker at Springfield College School of Social Work where I served as class president. I began looking for opportunities to grow, I was challenging myself by stepping out of my comfort zone. While gaining experience in the field of Social Work, I took a liking to therapy and the clinical aspects of therapy. Modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy stood out to me because they emphasized the power of our thoughts and how they influence how we feel and what we do. I moved to Northern California to continue gaining experience. Working with a variety of populations from adolescents and youth in community mental health settings to severely mentally impaired adults in psychiatric hospitals. After taking and passing a 4-hour long vigorous clinical exam, I added the credentials “LCSW” to end of my name. While proud of my accomplishment, I shorty realized that my impact would be limited to the state I was licensed in, and that felt restrictive. I had dreams of impacting people all over the world, not just in California. This is when I quit my job and moved to sunny South Florida with a gig as a Life Coach lined up. Life Coaching allowed me to work with clients in different countries, share my personal experiences when necessary, and decrease the use of stigmatizing labels that are often given in therapy. Shortly after, I started my own life coaching business, Mental Wealth Coaching, where I help Founders and Entrepreneurs eliminate stress and overwhelm so they can scale their businesses without burning out and losing their families. Today I work with committed and motivated, high-functioning clients who have a difficult time breaking through the next level of their life.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting and maintaining my business has come with its challenges. As someone who would consider themselves self-sufficient, I quickly learned that starting a small business is more manageable when you have support and guidance. Being coachable and learning from those who have done what I aspire to do is a pro tip that has worked in my favor. Getting business funding has been and continues to be my greatest struggle while in business. Funding is essential because it allows me to expand my business by building a team who can manage the operations of my business, market and promote my services and increase my brand awareness. All of these things increase my reach as well as my clientele. Some other struggles included not knowing where to start, resulting in many rookie mistakes such as overpaying for services and getting the short end of business dealings. All in all, the challenges I faced and continue to face in entrepreneurship are learning experiences and has built character throughout my journey.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Mental Wealth Coaching?
Mental Wealth Coaching is a mental health and personal development program founded in 2021 by Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Life Coach Anthony Joshua. Our focus is to equip Founders, Entrepreneurs, and Creatives with the tools to eliminate stress and overwhelm so they can scale their businesses without burning out and live a more fulfilled life with heightened consciousness. Our primary areas of expertise are mindset, communication, emotional intelligence, handling change, unlearning, vulnerability, and conflict management.
Our clients include but are not limited to Founders, high-level entrepreneurs, and everyday working millennials. Our 8+ years of experience working in community mental health, psychiatric facilities, 1:1 & couples therapy, and forensic settings makes us qualified and equipped to handle common and complex life problems.
Mental Wealth Coaching aims to normalize mental health and make it more acceptable amongst the black and brown community in a way that is sustainable. Traditional therapy focuses on symptoms. People are not their symptoms. Mental Wealth Coaching focuses on the whole person and takes into consideration the symptoms as well as the root causes. Working with clients in Canada, Nicaragua, Tokyo, Korea, and all over the United States has helped us understand that we are more alike than we are different, and while our problems are unique to us, we have similar struggles too.
Mental Wealth Coaching works with clients to identify areas of stress in different life domains and coaches and educates them to navigate the challenges of life effectively.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
When it comes to finding a mentor, I think it’s best to choose someone who has the results you are looking to achieve. It’s also helpful to find someone who has similar values as yourself. Having good rapport with your mentor is essential to your success, so I encourage putting your mentor through a vetting process to ensure it’s the right fit. Similar to the industry I’m in, shopping around for the perfect match can be a process in itself but worth it in the long run. A few things to consider when looking for a mentor are what are their hobbies and interest? Where do they hang out? How do they spend their leisure time? This will give you a good idea of the places you can find a like-minded individual who can potentially be a good support and or mentor.
