Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Kent.
Mark, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am a serial entrepreneur. I currently own and operate three companies: Care Management Resources, which is a Managed Services Organization (MSO) which helps provider practices operate successfully within value-based arrangements with health plans; Total Health Medical Centers, which operates eight primary and multispecialty care practices across the tri-county area; and Your Partners in Health, which provides primary care services in patient homes (home visits). Prior to returning to South Florida, I was the Chief Executive Officer of Women’s Health Care in Evansville, Indiana operating several locations in Evansville and Newburgh and an acute care hospital.
My journey as an entrepreneur began with the start of my IT recruiting company, Network Connections Group in St. Louis, Missouri. After operating that company for nearly four years, I sold it and moved to South Florida. I partnered with another entrepreneur to begin providing home hemodialysis visits to patients. We later sold the business, and I began working for Humana. I remained with Humana for ten years, where I ultimately became the CEO/Regional President of all Humana-owned, Florida-based primary care practices, including CAC-Florida, MetCare and Continucare – today known as Conviva Care Centers. I was responsible for building this division from 18 locations to 58 locations with expansion across the state of Florida. I am a nurse by training and am double board certified as a Fellow of the American College of Health Care Executives and a Fellow of the American College of Medical Practice Executives.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey has been a very difficult one. From being told I am too young, or I don’t have enough gray hair for a role; to being second-guessed or even disregarded due to my skin color, or doors of opportunity being closed just because I foster an environment of diversity and inclusion. Yet, I remain glad for those experiences because each of them taught me so much about myself and my drive to succeed.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We operate primary care medical practices in areas where access to good quality care is challenged. I am very proud of my team of physicians, nurse practitioners, and administrative staff because they know the work we do everyday matters. We hear it from our patients daily. It is unfortunate that the level of care and compassion we provide our patients every day is typically only found in more economically upscale areas. Nonetheless, we believe that everyone deserves quality and compassionate care regardless of their circumstances.
What makes you happy?
My great-grandmother taught me that every day is a blessing, a gift from God. It is what we do every day that matters. So, every day as the sun rises and sets, we are to do as much as we can for each other and our community. When we don’t do that, we have wasted a day.
