Today we’d like to introduce you to Tavares Kidd.
Hi Tavares, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I went to Howard University in 2014 on an academic scholarship for electrical engineering but by spending four years at this illustrious campus, I connected with a lot of talented people from different backgrounds. I became close friends with a lot of aspiring music artists, instrumentalists and producers, where I began to start supporting them a lot at their events and intimate creative thinking processes as I always loved music. We could’ve been just chilling in the dorms or in the Uber on the way to a party, my friends would love to pass me the aux cord because they knew I’d get them right with the latest tracks.
Near graduation time in early 2018, I had enough friends encouraging me to be a DJ to showcase my ear for good music so I started to curate playlists which I still love to do to this day. Now I drop a duo playlist series of the latest Hip-Hop/R&B tracks every season (Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall) of what I’m currently listening to at the time. After graduation, I moved back to Miami where I teamed up with a group of friends (like Blackmon Don, SlicknastySlick, Allahmon Solomon etc.) to start Skybox Recordings (independent label) and later on 4700 Enterprises, which was mainly intended to recruit and manage new producers and engineers but then grew to be a multi-media publishing company. Now I’m a DJ / marketing head for Skybox / President of Operations for 4700 Enterprises.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road but with every major struggle come major growth. I never had a mentor in the music industry so I had to learn a lot from trial and error, being out in the field, as some would say. Coming from an engineering background, I had to learn different methods of self-teaching for myself, which luckily worked in my favor sometimes into gaining more knowledge about the music industry, like making “Youtube University” one of my best friends. Also, the further I pursue my dreams, the more I realized the importance of surrounding yourself with individuals that truly have your best interest at heart which I believe almost anyone can agree that’s easier said than done, especially when you’re on the rise. The type of people that don’t only positively stimulate your train of thoughts but also quick to speak your name in a room of opportunities. And of course this journey comes with a lot of upstart costs to where I invested and lost a lot as attempts to forward our brand as I also believe you cannot be cheap with your business. Costs can greatly vary from things like distribution, promotion etc. so I had to figure out how to efficiently budget for the team. What you put out definitely reflects what you put in so I always offer the best I can for my collective.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Skybox Recordings is an independent music label based in North Miami, Florida. We distribute our artists’ music catalog and assist our artists in gaining positive media coverage, and use their brand to increase personal income and future opportunities to further the collective. Check out our IG page for updates: skyboxrecordings Under 4700 Enterprises, we currently manage a set of producers and their catalog and open doors for them to new opportunities like song placements and syncs. You can buy beats or book a session with one of our engineers at 4700enterprises.com or check out the IG Page: 4700enterprises. Our current releases are innovative and very thought-provoking but offer an enticing vibe that many in South Florida are growing to love and we plan to spread that same love across the globe.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Being steadfast and consistent. Along time ago, I heard a quote that always stuck to me “Consistency will bridge the gap from where you are to where you want to be” Be consistent for long enough and you’ll see little acts turn into great accomplishments. Trust and believe that.
