Today we’d like to introduce you to Maeva Komenan.
Hi Maeva, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Hi, my name is Maeva Komenan. I am a 29 year old freelance photographer, film make and digital content creator. My creative journey has been continuous my entire life. I developed an interest for photography around the 9th grade, I think it stems from my father always documenting everything our family did. I started to focus more on film making in college and fast forward to 2018, I rented my first studio space to film projects and ended up falling in love with studio photography which became my main concentration for the last 3 year along with set design, make up, styling & creative directing.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. Turning your passion into a career has some ups and down. For me, my attitude has always been ” focus on perfecting the craft’ and the recognitions and opportunities will come with in due time. But I quickly learned that balancing continuous growth within your skills and learning how to run a business is nothing to take lightly. Building a brand takes time and consistency.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m known for my editorial style of photography and my focus on creative direction, styling and portraiture. I am most proud of my continuous growth, the quality of the work I produce keeps going up because I am constantly challenging myself to learn new things and techniques. I believe what sets me apart from others is my attention to detail and my take on portraying black beauty.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I would just like to encourage anyone who has been feeling down about their art lately to just be kind to themselves and keep going at their own pace. Mastering yourself and your art is not a race. Take your time.
