Daily Inspiration: Meet JD Danner

Today we’d like to introduce you to JD Danner.

Hi JD, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?

I grew up in a very musical family. My father who was from Sicily sang opera and my mother to this day at 88 years old, plays classical piano. My grandmother, who I am named after, played piano and ukulele. She taught me at the age of 5 years old how to play old tunes on the ukulele. One of my favorites was, “Five Foot Two, Eyes Of Blue.”At 7 years old I started piano lessons but I always wanted to play the drums so for my “get well” gift after having my tonsils removed, I asked for a drum set. Years later, in my first band, I was the drummer. I was actually painfully shy as a child, but I loved being on stage. When I was in the first grade, the lunchroom doubled as the auditorium and though I was too shy to talk to the other kids, when I saw the stage and a microphone I convinced the lunch lady, who was my mother’s friend, to let me sing for the kids in the cafeteria.

From the time I was a very young child, I found joy in music and entertaining others. Though I dreamed of being a rock star, I abandoned that dream as an adult for a career in corporate America as an accountant. However, I found deadlines for spread sheets and monthly financial reports to be stressful, empty and soul-crushing.

Along with an unfulfilling career, I was dealing with infertility struggles due to endometriosis through most of my 20s. After five years of physical and emotional pain, I was told that having a child was not possible. I had gained 40 pounds in the process and felt completely hopeless. At this point, I just needed to feel happy again. It was then that I remembered what truly made me happy. So, I signed up for vocal lessons, started my first band, and never looked back!  I had been living in a kind of hopelessness and music was once again my solace.

So I traded in my calculator for an Ovation guitar and I began to pour my feelings into my lyrics. Every note was healing to me and cathartic. I released my first album of original music in 1998 and I never stopped writing or performing since that time.

My music has taken me to some pretty incredible places including Lucas Oil Stadium to perform during an NFL half-time show and to Guantanamo Bay and other various military bases as well as the iconic Bluebird Café in Nashville.”

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has been fulfilling but peppered with various challenges including the inevitable moments of disappointment and rejection. However, there are also moments of magic. My passion for music keeps me on this journey of magic and madness.

There have been many times I have wanted to give up but every time I got close to walking away, something would happen to convince me to keep going. The music always calls me back… When a fan writes to let me know that one of my songs got them through a tough time or that they chose one of my songs for their wedding song, that is beyond priceless and inspiring.

One time, I was scheduled to play at a music festival that promised to be a huge opportunity. After driving four hours and paying travel expenses and hotel rooms for the entire band, I realized it was a total scam. On the drive home, fueled by anger, tears, and truck stop coffee, I decided to call it quits. I questioned why am I still doing this? When I got home, I checked my email, and sitting in my inbox was a letter from a woman who had bought a CD at one of my shows. She said I didn’t know her, but my song, “Shelter From The Shame,” inspired her to leave an abusive relationship, move to a different state, and build a shelter for victims of domestic violence. My tears became tears of joy. I immediately was reminded this was the reason why I do this and I was exactly where I was supposed to be.
I believe what sets me apart from other artists is that I did not start performing professionally until I was 30 years old. Most serious artists hit the stage and the road in their 20s and sometimes even younger. In the business of music, if you have not made it by 30, especially as a woman, that’s when you try something else.

As I mentioned, I took a detour into corporate America because even though my family was musical, playing music was regarded as a hobby and not a career.  Ironically, though I abandoned a dream and left that part of me behind, it was another broken dream years later that brought me right back to my true heart’s desire.
At the end of the day, it’s about following your heart and elevating others along the way when you have the opportunity.  Music is such a powerful force in so many ways and definitely worth the rocky road of the journey!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I like to use music in a philanthropic way. In doing so, I have had the opportunity to pen songs used in fundraising for organizations such as Women In Distress (“Shelter From The Shame”), Forgotten Soldiers Outreach (“Thanks To The Brave”) and The American Cancer Society and (“Brand New Angel”).

As a member of the LGBTQ community, I tour nationally to play at Pride events along with touring nationally and overseas to perform at military bases for our military men and women and their families. One of my proudest moments was being invited to perform my song, “Thanks To The Brave” at a Veteran’s Day half-time show for the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Performing at Nashville’s legendary Blue Bird Cafe is also an achievement I am very proud of in my career. Each time I return to play there I am gratefully in awe to be on that stage.
I believe I am now living my destiny because even though I started on a path of what I thought I was ‘supposed to be,” fate brought me full circle to my true heart’s desire. I find it ironic that I had more self-awareness at 6 years old than I did at 20!

So in starting my music career much later than most, I have always hoped I could be an inspiration to those women who think it’s too late to follow a dream, even if it is a dream from their childhood.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I am excited about a new show I put together called, “Life In A Song” The JD Danner Story. This is a biopic concert in which I will perform my original songs to tell the story of my journey in life and in music. I will share some of my most pivotal moments – the
triumphs and the struggles.

This is a show of raw emotion,  powerful music and some of my never before told intimate stories. I describe it as, “everything you want to know about JD Danner but were afraid to ask!”  Everyone has their own unique story and I am excited to be telling mine in this show which will be debuting on October 14th, 2022 at the wonderfully artistic venue, Arts Garage in Delray Beach, Florida.

My plan is to take this show on the road with the intention to inspire others to “dare to dream” no matter what obstacles get in the way and to “never say never” about it being too late to follow a dream!  Anyone you has ever feared failure and rejection needs to see this show!

For every disappointment, there is a great opportunity around the corner. One important piece of advice I would share is – you should check your emails often and always answer your phone! Opportunity doesn’t always knock twice… You never know when that email or call is gonna come along bringing the next great experience. Leave no opportunity unexplored, even if it seems unlikely or out of your realm.

This has happened to me so many times. It is not always the things we are chasing that are the best things to come to us. So many awesome opportunities that have come my way were things that I never even thought of pursuing. Think outside the box and carry on!
