Today we’d like to introduce you to Guy Michel.
Hi Guy, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My dad introduced me to it when I was 5 because that’s his favorite instrument. He took me to a recital and I think the guy performing ended up being my teacher. I continued my studies in the US and continued to pursue a bachelors degree in music education. In 2008, I decided to pursue a solo career and experiment with other genres outside of classical music.
Mixing genres in my work has created enough awareness for me to perform locally, nationally and internationally.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Oh definitely not. The fact that my instrument is viewed as a classical instrument has made it very challenging for people to see me as a main artist instead of being in the background. I still get confused looks and responses from some people when I tell them that I don’t play for an orchestra and that I’m an entertainer who plays the cello
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a cellist who specialize in entertaining people with my instrument, whether at weddings or nightclubs. I’m proud of the fact that people are finally starting to see me as more than just an instrumentalist. I’m very different from your average cellist because I can easily switch from easy listening to hip hop, reggaeton , etc. and most importantly, I provide an experience.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I’m really convinced that instrumentalists will be viewed as “singers” of their instrument. The term “classical instrument” will be a thing of the past. At least that’s my hope 🙂
