Today we’d like to introduce you to Diana Fernandez.
Hi Diana, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In 2021 I came back to live in Miami in order to help my mom take care of my grandparents. I tried finding part-time in-person work, or preferably remote work, that would allow me a flexible schedule to spend the most time available with my grandparents. However, it was difficult to find this kind of work. During the pandemic, I had picked up some hobbies to help pass the time, and one of those was making earrings. I’ve always loved earrings, and essentially the only jewelry I always remember to wear. Yet finding cute and affordable earrings could be difficult. That’s one of the reasons that led me to learning to piece together earrings. Since I couldn’t find a job with a flexible schedule, I decided to start making earrings that would be affordable for everyone but very cute so people could purchase multiple pairs to wear on different occasions.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The biggest hurdles were figuring out how to start the business, like what licenses I would need or how to register the name as a business. Once that was figured out, the next challenge was figuring out where and how to sell the earrings. It took some time to find available markets, but also ones that fit best with our products.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I started making beaded earrings because I was using pieces from broken jewelry that my friends or family would give me to repurpose. That’s one of my favorite things, being able to give older pieces a new life. I also make fun earrings with beer mugs or fun animals like llamas. My goal was always to make cute earrings that appeal to everyone. But even more so, to make sure that those earrings were affordable so people don’t have to choose just one—they can take home a few!
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I love meeting makers and working together! If someone has an idea for a specific type or style of earring, I want to hear that idea so we can come up with a design together.
