Today we’d like to introduce you to Vanessa Weiss.
Hi Vanessa, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Doing hair has always been a hobby of mine, a creative outlet. I colored my own hair for the first time when I was 10, and from there I did everyone’s hair I knew. I didn’t dream of being a hair stylist when I grew up though, like most hair stylists do. I had many interests, but ultimately decided to go to college to be a child psychologist. I had a strong passion to help people, but after a few years I realized it just wasn’t for me. I thought I would take a break from college and just go to hair school until I figured out “what I really wanted to do”. Well, after my first day of hair school at the Aveda Institute of South Florida, I knew that was what I was meant to do. I assisted in a salon for a year, then began as a stylist/colorist at another salon where I spent 10 years learning and growing as a stylist, but also as a person.
I knew at some point that I would go on to have my own salon studio, but a few different things coincided in 2020 to make my dreams happen sooner than I had originally intended. I am a mother of 2 amazing boys, and was pregnant with my second during most of covid (he was born august 2020). With the support of my incredible husband, I decided to start my own business and open my own private hair studio. I knew it would be a lot to handle at first, with a newborn and another child in pre-k, not to mention amidst a global pandemic, but I knew it would be a success. So in December of 2020, “Get Cut or Dye Hair Studio” came to fruition. I’m so incredibly grateful that I have been busy since day 1, and my family, friends, and my clients have been so supportive!
Doing hair is more than just a job or career. It is my passion. I don’t just “do hair”. Hair is an art, and hair is my canvas. My clients become friends and I truly value my relationships with them. My clients don’t just come to get their hair done, they come for an experience, to have a moment for them, and leaving with gorgeous hair is a bonus. Now that I have my own place, I can truly give them the best experience.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Opening your own business, even small like mine, there’s always obstacles and new challenges to overcome. Learning about the new taxes, getting all the proper licensing, deciding on everything from your business name to the decor of the space, to what brand of products to carry – it’s a lot to handle, especially in a short amount of time and as a mom of small kids. Then the added concerns of opening a business during a global pandemic, and trying to plan for the uncertainties that go along with that.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a hair colorist and stylist. I specialize in blonding, vivid colors, and technical haircuts. I also specialize in a few different types of treatments for the hair (straightening, keratin, repairing). I am most proud of my ability to communicate with my clients to create the best hair for them. What will work best for their lifestyle, their budget, their style and most importantly what will give them the most confidence and help them to love their hair. I also stay educated and knowledgeable about new products and all the current trends and techniques. The beauty industry is forever changing, and it’s very important to stay current and it’s also just something I love to learn, I can’t get enough.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My biggest cheerleader and supporter is my husband Jordan. He has been the one that truly made me believe in myself. He also helped me with getting everything set up (license and zoning applications, finding my amazing accountant, hanging shelves and putting together furniture for the space, etc…). He also has taken on more responsibilities at home and with our kids to give me more time and energy to handle things for the business. My loyal clients that followed me 3 towns away, about 15 miles from the previous salon I worked at, and many of those clients referred many new people to me. My friends and family that have encouraged me and promoted my business. And a few of my friends that are also stylists/salon owners that have inspired me and guided me.
