Conversations with Sanique Olkuch

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sanique Olkuch.

Hi Sanique, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
During primary school, I was obsessed with letters. I loved tracing them, decorating them with floral doodles, and finding different variations of letters everywhere. In 2019, I was looking for a creative outlet after 10 years of working in the healthcare field. I was listening to an episode of a Gretchen Rubin podcast, and she recommended to reconnect with the things you loved when you were 10 years old and that’s how I reconnected with my childhood love for letters and my passion for calligraphy was born.

I started Sanique Calligraphy as a way to share my love for calligraphy with as many people as possible. I love the way people react when they see something I’ve created for them. They way their face light up when they see their name written in beautiful letters brings me so much joy!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a creative business is not always easy but I have learned to take the difficult lessons along with the wins. One of the biggest obstacles I’ve had to face when I first started was putting my work out there. I’ll never forget when I first tried to partner with a local stationer, she directly told me that my work was too basic for her clients. I was so heartbroken that it took me a long time to start showcasing my work again, but I didn’t let that setback derail me forever. I took it as motivation to work harder and I have since been able to collaborate with other stationers who value my work and have been able to land jobs with clients like Pandora and Tiffany and Co!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a calligrapher and engraver based in Miami. I specialize in luxury calligraphy on envelopes and place cards for special events for private and corporate clients. I also specialize in calligraphy engraving (done by hand) both live in front of my corporate clients’ guests for brand activations and influence events and in studio for private and corporate clients to meet their gifting needs (e.g., VIP gifting, holiday and birthday gifting, and promotional gifting)

I am most proud of the fact that I started my business while working full-time in healthcare. I still work in healthcare, but I have been dedicating more time to expanding my business because I have seen first-hand how excited my clients get when they see my work and it motivates me to share more.

What was your favorite childhood memory? I love to travel and one of my favorite childhood memories was my first family road trip at the age of six! I think that trip sparked my love for travel, and I will forever be grateful for the opportunity!
