Conversations with Pierre Hosang

Today we’d like to introduce you to Pierre Hosang.

Hi Pierre, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Miami Krew Soccer Club started as a men’s team in 2007. Our goal at the time was to help college and high school students get into a college soccer program whilst playing and developing in the local men’s league.

In 2014, I got the opportunity to start my own holiday soccer camps, where I was able to meet young players from all around the community that needed a soccer club not just to play at but to truly call home. I knew that this was my time to make a difference in the community and welcomed this exciting new venture in life. Best decision I have made so far! Since 2015, our Club has shifted its focus to players 13 years old and younger. We have been a strong youth Club since then and have had over 250 players represent the Krew. Our youth teams have won five tournaments, two leagues and 10-time finalists in tournament and league play. Miami Krew has built a strong connection with Elementary Schools, Middle Schools, High Schools, Clubs, Colleges, and professional teams that know about our club and come to us to find young talented players. Some of these players have gone on to sign scholarships with local and national colleges. We would like to provide more of those outlets to this community. I have lived in Cutler Bay for the past six years and see that there is a lot of talented players, but they have no real pathway to becoming a professional or even earn a college degree through soccer. Time and hard work have allowed our Club to build a solid reputation among our local soccer community, especially in the Palmetto Bay, Kendall, Pinecrest, Homestead and South Miami area.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
If it was smooth, it probably wouldn’t be worth it! When I started in 2007, one of my biggest struggles was financing the team. I only had a part-time job at an elementary school while also finishing up my bachelor degree at FIU (and playing for the university). It really did put a strain on my living situation and I ended up being without a home for two months. Luckily, the groundskeeper, Sergio, at the elementary school I worked at was nice enough allow let me sleep in the P.E. office at the school, I remember hanging out at the school field until all the teachers would leave so that no one would know my situation. I will never forget the day the principal at the time drove by late one evening and saw me at the P.E. room. She asked me what I was doing there and I told her I didn’t have a place to stay, so just here for a short time to get an efficiency. What she said next was really surprising, “Ah coach, you cannot stay here, it is a liability so you need to leave now.” This was a big turning point for me, as I realized I had to focus on myself to get where I wanted to be. It did hurt to know you gave 10 years to a school and in your time of need, it was hard to get help. Field location has been an issue. We have been searching for a location to really do everything we are capable of doing. But limited space means limited ideas and limited development.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am the director and head coach for my club, Miami Krew. We specialize in player development, both mentally and physically. We prepare players for high levels of competition. As the head coach, I have to make sure the coaches are qualified and have an outstanding background. We also have to make sure parents understand our culture, have a good understanding of the game and can appreciate our developmental pathway. Our players must be fundamentally sound when they move on to the next level. They need to have a high IQ and understanding of the game. Understand the importance of nutrition and general health.

As the director, I have to oversee all the coaching staff and handle all parental concerns. Putting together the teams, building the yearly calendar, organizing club events, are just some of the things I do as the director. Miami Krew is known for being organized, for providing a family-friendly environment and also for its attention to detail when it comes to player development. No player gets left behind! We are most proud of the environment we have created so that players can develop at their fastest rate. This environment provides the right balance between fun and intensity, which are both needed to further enjoy the game. Because of this environment, 90% of the players we train have and are going to move on to higher levels of play. 100% of them are and will be positive contributors to our society. What sets us a part is our passion to develop, our understanding of the process at this age, and treating everyone in our program as family. Hence the name “Krew.” It is a lifetime bond that can never be taken away and will forever be remembered as a special time in our lives. I still get calls about how great we are and how much we are appreciated for our passion to really help all players, not just the most talented. Actually, I get more joy developing a player that has never played before, rather than getting a player that thinks he is the next Messi. Krew is a way of life, not just a soccer club! Another thing that sets us a part is that we are the FIRST local youth soccer club to offer and get our players heart screened through the getheartcharged foundation.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I turned down a pro contract to finish my engineering degree and start my own soccer club. DJing is my second passion, made money from it in Jamaica. I was in the Jamaican under-14 national pool of players. I captained all but one team in my playing career. I was homeless for two months and never gave up on the dream of owning my own soccer club. I self-reflect everyday on things I could’ve done better and recognize the things I did well. Miami Krew started as a local men’s team.
