Conversations with Karen Rosenbloom

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Rosenbloom.

Hi Karen, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Since the age of seven, cooking has been my greatest passion. I grew up watching the Food Network channel alongside my grandmother, yearning to immerse myself in the culinary world.

Culinary school was a natural progression following high school. At the age of 18, I enrolled at Johnson and Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island where I successfully completed an associate’s degree in Culinary Arts. Although my culinary education was extremely thorough, I felt unchallenged academically. In search of higher education, I applied to the School of General Studies at Columbia University where I am currently a junior studying Creative Writing. I plan on merging my passions of cooking and writing to connect people universally through the language of food.

In addition to school, I have been actively pursuing content creation. My TikTok page, @Karens_Cooking which started as a hobby has accumulated over 130,000 followers in the last two years. I now work as a food content creator, sharing my passion for cooking with my followers.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I started working in restaurants as soon as I turned 18. I remember going into work confident in my self-taught skills. However, I was quickly corrected when I observed the chefs throwing around terms such as “cambro, brunoise, velouté, and julienne.” The environment of a restaurant is the polar opposite of a home kitchen. Working in the industry gave me invaluable knowledge which is impossible to gain in a classroom environment.

I have worked in seven different professional kitchens, and each experience has taught me technical skills which not only enhance my cooking but more importantly, have taught me discipline, endurance, and organizational skills which I utilize in my academic life.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
In June of 2020, I began working for an established Chef named Isaac Perlman. He introduced me to the world of private chef work.

At the same time, I started my TikTok page (@Karens_Cooking) and began posting videos. My TikToks would include vlogs demonstrating “a day in the life of a private chef” or recipe videos. Once my page began to grow, TikTok also became a marketing tool to showcase our culinary services to the community.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Being a full-time student at Columbia University, I dedicate a lot of time to my studies. I read many academic books and articles as I currently am taking four classes.

As a Miami native who recently moved to New York, I have been exploring Manhattan, visiting museums, shows, and restaurants. Beyond cooking and writing, I also enjoy painting, poetry, and reading.
