Holly earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in German Literature and Business from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Originally from Munich, Germany, Holly has lived in many places before settling with her husband and two boys in Jupiter. She is the founder of a non-profit called Cupboard Clean Out for Kids, which has donated thousands of unopened, unused, non-perishable food items back to the Jupiter community over the years. In addition to running a successful business and her community leadership, Holly also maintains an active lifestyle through her participation in an adult soccer league, running an occasional marathon and skiing. She is fluent in English and German.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a company and having it grow to the level that mine has been challenging for a number of reasons but the biggest challenge has been recognizing that I am the worst “hirer” on the planet. I have made some big mistakes by putting the wrong people into the wrong roles within my team, primarily because my heart always wants to help everyone, so when I first started, I would create positions for people who simply were not qualified for the jobs I was trying to create for them. I ended up with a team full of people who were half qualified for roles within our organization that were really only half-baked roles to begin with. I am a big softie so I allowed so much BS early on in my career from people who worked for me because I thought a “good leader” was someone who was easy going and who created opportunities for people – but in reality, a good leader creates opportunities that benefit the group collectively, and stands by policies and procedures for the greater good of the company and group.
Being a baseball wife has its challenges, too. I would never compare myself to a single mother, but my husband is gone half the year during the baseball season (he works for the San Francisco Giants), so I am a “solo mother.” We have three boys – 7 years old, five years old, 1-year-old. Giving them the attention they deserve from a mom while running my business definitely comes with challenges, especially when you run a real estate business.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
I grew up in Germany (my dad is German and my mom is American), and I have lived all over the United States through my husband’s baseball career and my own professional career before real estate. What made me a good realtor early on was my ability to help people navigate the home buying and selling process because I have lived it so many times personally. My baseball and athlete clients have a particular affinity for that with me and my team because I personally live the same life as they do. The sports and entertainment world is a very small bubble.
