Conversations with the Inspiring Kerry-Ann Scott-Spence

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kerry-Ann Scott-Spence.

Kerry-Ann, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
It’s my name where KASS came about and I added Stylz, now, we have Kass_Stylz. I am a fashion and lifestyle blogger from the tropical and beautiful island, Jamaica, currently residing in the sunshine state, Florida. I am a teacher by profession, but fashion has always been my passion. Going through high school, I wanted to be a fashion designer, but God had other plans. Don’t get me wrong, I love my job as a teacher, but I also love dressing up.

I live and breathe fashion in its true sense; meaning there isn’t a right or wrong way to this dressing game. We all have our own sense of style, I learned that through my many conversations with family and friends. I have grown to appreciate another person’s sense of style because we aren’t all the same. I was exposed to fashion and style from a tender age; my grandmother was my first fashion teacher. She always had herself well put together, her outfits for church on Sundays were everything.

My style is chic, yet edgy. I never limit myself when it comes to fashion, challenging myself to step out of my comfort zone and what I see every day. I love having fun with pieces; mixing colors and different textures. I believe style should be versatile, all the while adding an element of surprise. Style should be effortless, while still staying true to your own identity of what we think is stylish. The goal is to always look appealing and fashion-forward without trying too hard.

My love for fashion and the push from family members and friends helped me to finally make the decision to start a blog. After years of procrastination and fear, I took the bold step and never looked back. I already had clothes and shoes and accessories so the only thing I had to do was build a website, which I did on my own with a little help from a friend. I bought a camera even though my husband and I had no clue how to use it, but we were willing to learn.

Fast forward to today, a year and 2 months later, I am a blogger. One that knows what she has to offer to the people that view my blog and follow me on social media. A woman with her own sense of style and passion for I do. Consistency and being true to myself are key components to how I got to where I am today.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road, matter a fact the road is never smooth when you are pushing to realize your dreams. At first, I struggled with the fear that no one will like my style or even read my blog. I thought, here I am this little Jamaican country girl that nobody knows about wanting to make strides in the fashion world. For me, that’s what held me back and caused me to wait for so long to start a blog, but I have learned that it’s not when you start, it’s the fact that you started.

My advice for other women, particularly young women who are just starting their journey would have to be don’t let fear get in your way of realizing your dreams. If you are passionate about something never let anything or no one stand in your way of pursuing your cause. Another piece of advice is to do your research. Never stop learning, the more you know about your craft, the better you will be able to stand out from the crowd. A lot of people may be doing the same thing you are doing but what makes you unique. What makes you the person to call on for the job? Think about that!

what should we know about Kass_Stylz? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
As stated earlier, I am a fashion and lifestyle blogger who teaches with fashion sense and encourage positive lifestyles. Through my blog, I inspire women to dress like they already won the Power Ball without breaking the bank. I show them how to mix and match pieces already in their closets and tell where they can find affordable pieces to spruce up their outfits. My blog allows me to make connections with other amazing women who I challenge to grow into their own invincible self.

I am known to bring the heat, LOL, I’m just kidding. I am known for my chic looks and also for just being plain honest about fashion and lifestyle. I don’t try to present a fairytale sort of lifestyle to the public because people love when they can relate or connect to what you do and say. The everyday woman can not afford to buy expensive luxury pieces, so my job is to show them how they can look their best without spending a lot.

As a brand, I am most proud of the fact that help other women by sharing my knowledge and research with them. My blog is now a resource for them to use. They can go to my blog to find places to shop if they need a particular piece or something similar to what I was wearing. When I get feedback from these women, it means the world to me and lets me know I am doing something right.

It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
In terms of apps, I use Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Snapchat for social media. I recently downloaded Planoly, it’s an app used to schedule Instagram posts. I need it now because I’m back at work and it helps me to keep up with my regular posting. How could I forget the Word Press app, it allows me to approve and respond to comments on my blog and even check my stats.

I just ordered, Influencer: Building Your Personal Brand in the Age of Social Media by Brittany Hennessy. I can’t wait to get it, so I can dive right into this book. I am a religious listener of, The Influencer Podcast by Julie Solomon. I subscribe and read quite a few blogs, too many to name but they all interest me, and I love the body of work presented in them all.
