Today we’d like to introduce you to Kerra Denel.
Kerra, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My skills were developed after ten years of perfecting sales and coordination in the corporate world. The brand was then established in the entertainment industry from connections that were made throughout the years internationally. I paired my social skills and the love for my culture with my marketing experience and propelled the brand that is now known as Kerra Denel Entertainment.
I premiered as an event producer with my first official intimate event Winterlicious in New York City followed by Inferno. Not long after, I expanded my portfolio by doing event planning on a much more grander scale for Carib Style Week and Colors of the Caribbean in Fort Lauderdale. From these experiences I gathered, I then diversified my portfolio of clients and services as time went on. I now proudly wear several hats within my business from event producer, talent manager, pr and media specialist, voice talent and brand ambassador.
Through all of the relationships I built, I was able to fulfill my love for children by creating a non-profit organization called Kerra Loves Kids, which allows me to give back to my community in Trinidad and Tobago, my home.
My continued passion for people led me to create a platform to empower and uplift women like myself. Caribbean Women’s Power Lunch became the beginning of a movement and has had tremendous success in both Toronto and Miami. The goal for this campaign is to keep the momentum going globally and continue to inspire women through sisterhood.
In celebration of my Caribbean heritage, I launched an interactive online magazine named Du Soleil. This magazine pays homage to fellow Caribbean influencers across various fields and showcases the true beauty of the Caribbean, people, and lifestyle.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Being an entrepreneur has surely had many ups and downs. Lack of sleep, long days, tons of closed doors and a test of my faith. I would say one of the biggest struggles I have encountered is being able to master a male-dominated industry and break barriers set by men. In order to overcome these challenges, I honed in on my craft and focused on delivering elevated events and services because of the difficultly to earn the respect of my colleagues. Furthermore, I used this an an opportunity to motivate me to surpass expectations.
My piece of advice for young women who are just starting their journey is to first believe in their purpose. That burning desire is so very real, never neglect that! There will be times when you feel like you can’t go on, but trust in your abilities and have faith that anything you imagine is possible. Do not allow fear to drive you away from what you are destined to do. You hold the key to your future, you are in control. Stay consistent, document your goals, visualize them and work hard every minute, every hour, every day. Dwell in an environment that fosters your growth and surround yourself with people who lift you higher. Always remember, knowledge is power so continue to feed your mind and fill your soul.
What should we know about Kerra Denel Entertainment? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My proudest moment was the launch of my website kerradenel.com. After months of tedious planning and developing, seeing it come to fruition made me feel accomplished. It was official, I established an online presence and it legitimatized Kerra Denel as a full fledge business. In the words of other female entrepreneurs, I was officially a “Boss Babe”!
One thing I have always done is stay true to myself and my brand regardless of the twists and turns. My passion is the backbone of every project I conceptualize, and I am notorious for making my visions a reality. My innate ability to lead and connect people is my secret tool, it allows me to leverage my notoriety to empower others. Giving back has always been a crucial part of my mission, it would be incomplete if I was not making a significant difference in the lives of those around me.
It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
