Community Highlights: Meet Mariana Cancio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mariana Cancio.

Hi Mariana, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I have dedicated my life to the law, community, and family. After working in prestigious legal firms in Florida, I decided to establish my own law practice, a 100% woman-owned/run business. Today, our office is very busy and is considered one of the top real estate law firms in South Florida. I have lent legal expertise to countless local community organizations and institutions for over 20 years.

From 2007-2009, I was a Board Member of the Miami-Dade County Community Relations Board. Its primary mission is to foster mutual understanding, tolerance, and respect among all economic, social, religious, and ethnic groups in the county. Both Parents of Murdered Children and the Trayvon Martin Foundation recognized my commitment to causes that better the lives of our residents and community. My advocacy of the Florida Legislature’s HB 111 “Witness Protection Bill” created a new exemption in Florida law that shields murder witnesses’ identities from being released in public records for two years after the crime was committed.

I was a member of the Miami-Dade County Hispanic Affairs Advisory Board from 2002-2003 then 2007-2010 and served as its Chair from 2006-2007. I have consistently advocated for “Dreamers” and utilized my position on HAAB to improve the quality of life of Hispanic residents. From 2004-2005, I served on the Minority/Women’s Business Enterprise Advisory Board in Orange County, Florida advising small enterprises in doing business with the government.

I served as a Trustee of Miami Dade College, the largest institution of higher learning in the nation. As I put myself through college, I understand the importance of offering higher quality education and affordability for all of Florida’s families. In 2007, I began to give my time as pro-bono legal counsel to “La Liga Contra el Cancer” (The League Against Cancer) and continue to serve as their main attorney. I also served as a Commissioner to the Florida Healthcare and Hospital Funding Commission from 2015-2016, traveling the state attending forums discussing ways to make healthcare affordable for Florida’s families.

I currently serve as Chairwoman of the Greater Miami Expressway Agency and Board Member of Florida’s SBDC.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As with everything in life, there are struggles that must be met with courage, grit, and determination. I find that in order to achieve your goals and dreams, you must challenge yourself and take a giant leap of faith.
