Today we’d like to introduce you to Mikey Berlfein.
Hi Mikey, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I initially picked up my first camera when I was working at a small StartUp back in 2014/2015. It was the time when Instagram was really blowing up and every business started needing photos. So I grabbed my dad’s camera and started trying and learning. Later that year, we went on a family trip to Arizona and after bringing the camera there, I was hooked.
I started learning as much as I could to try and get better at photography. Eventually, I got to the point where I would have friends ask me to take photos of them, or their family. By the time I noticed that multiple people started asking, I considered the business of it.
5 years later and I never would have guessed where that hobby would have taken me on this path. To freelancing full time and being able to work with Professional Sports teams like Inter Miami CF from the MLS, as well as brands like Starbucks, and even being the Lead Photographer for the FIU Athletic Department. I managed to turn this hobby into a full blown career, and I am so fortunate and blessed to be able to do what I do.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Plenty of mistakes along the way, as well as many learning experiences. I never had a perfect game I shot, I always have photos that aren’t in focus, I’ve definitely missed a big moment more than once, and I have DEFINITELY had (very few) unhappy clients in the past.
Mistakes are how you learn, just try to make sure you only learn each lesson once.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a freelance photographer who specializes in Sports Photography. I’m known for being a prolific photographer on assignments where I’m able to get many different angles, views, and perspectives to get a broad view of an assignment. I love making images that will outlive me in history, as they are more valuable than the moment. Specifically the FIU vs UMiami football game at Marlin’s Park in 2019 where FIU won on the grounds of the former Orange Bowl. Simply a historic moment.
Outside of sports work, I’m most definitely known for my graduation photography. I’ve been covering FIU, UMiami, and Nova Graduations since 2016 and every grad season is a hectic one.
What makes you happy?
Getting a great result after putting in a lot of effort.
Knowing that one day, there will be people who look back on their lives and careers by looking at my images to remember it by.
