Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay Thomas.
Jay, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I’m an emo singing Scorpio. I’ve released two studio albums and a live Bandcamp compilation as Bluejay. Now I’m getting ready to release my first single under my own name, Jay Thomas, on September 14th. The song is called Rocket Ship — For the video, we had some lost boy fun in the mangroves.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
This new album is called Fantasma Tropical — it was conceived as a dark Miami mixtape.
Palm trees and sparkly beaches have always been the backdrop to my life, whether I’m having a great day or going through some tragedy. Tropical places are seen mostly for the bright superficial side but there is also an emotional side that I like to play in. There’s a dichotomy to being an emotional person in paradise.
The sterotype of a starving artist scares away many potentially talented artists from pursuing art – any advice or thoughts about how to deal with the financial concerns an aspiring artist might be concerned about?
Musicians who perform their original compositions can create a *BMI Live* account and submit their setlists to receive royalties they are owed for performances.
I’m in the process of learning more about the music business. I’m open to other bands when I find out these tips and I like to soak up their knowledge as well. For lack of a better word, it’s a sloppy business because we’re all out having a drink, performing live, so a few lucid tips can go a long way!
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
The most comprehensive version of my discography, including the live compilation and a Rocky Horror Picture Show cover, is at JayThomas.Bandcamp.com.
The studio albums “Goblins” and “Mercury” are on streaming services under “Bluejay”, and “Fantasma Tropical” will be on streaming services under “Jay Thomas”.
Best way to support is to come to the shows and party with us! We like to have a drink and have a good time.
Our next show is on September 13 at The Midway in Miami.
