Today we’d like to introduce you to Candice Marie Singleton.
Candice Marie, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
Woo! Well, my journey was definitely a discouraging one, but I am forever grateful for it nonetheless. Let’s just say I have been acting on and off since I was about nine years old. Throughout the years, my dad tried almost everything to get me to focus on other things like throwing me into sports programs that I wanted no parts of, lecturing me about the perils of the industry, and even offering to buy me the best sports gear to use for the sports I hated doing.
However, I was determined to act regardless because I knew that being an athlete, a doctor, a lawyer, or anything else “safe” was not something that I ever wanted to do. I even convinced my parents to let me transfer to another high school 30 minutes away from my house under the guise of wanting to join their all-star athletic and academic programs. Truthfully, the school I attended before then didn’t have a drama program so I desperately wanted to attend any school that allowed me to do anything pertaining to acting.
A couple of years later, I attended Florida State University where I obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theater and a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminology. I didn’t start heavily pursuing it until I moved back to Miami where I worked briefly as a Juvenile Probation Officer among other odd jobs that simply were not for me. Now, I am acting in Miami and Atlanta. Of course, I still have a loooong way to go, but I am definitely proud of my progress; always making strides to become the best actress that I can be.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I am an actress first. One of the reasons why I act is because I love getting lost in a character that’s seemingly not like myself but then finding those little moments or aspects of that character that actually does connect us. As I continue my journey through this industry, however, I find myself dabbling in producing and writing more and more. I think there is so much beauty in creating your own work from scratch because it comes from you and your own unique outlook.
It can honestly be really scary to create because you want it to be accepted, but I am learning quickly that there is no magic formula in creating anything. I create for myself and if people are touched along the way, then great. If not, then it wasn’t for them and that is absolutely okay too. I think, all in all, authenticity in every way inspires me. I love when I watch something or hear a song and I don’t necessarily understand what’s going on but I can feel that it came from a real place. I think that’s how I want people to view my work or even my acting, They may not understand my choices or my art in every way, but as long as they feel it, that’s all that matters to me.
How can artists connect with other artists?
Oh yes, this is very true. My advice is to attend classes or networking events to connect with other people like yourself. I will say that there can be a loneliness in that at times too because you may find people that aren’t true artists and may be doing it for the wrong reasons. Therefore, you inevitably feel alone again because you can’t relate to those people. When that happens, my advice is to just be you and move authentically through these events and classes regardless. The right people will be attracted to your unique energy and will no doubt, find you. Instagram is also a great way to connect with people. I can’t tell you how many random actors I have followed that I somehow ended up doing projects with or seeing at events. Some of these people are also my really good friends just from a random follow so you don’t necessarily need to go out and seek other people either. That’s one of the beauties of social media.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
