Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Murray.
Amanda, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I am a Miami native started art when I was in elementary with a child’s toy called DigiDraw. It was a cool child invention that helped hone my visual eye skills. Later on, I applied to Design and Architecture Senior High with barely any training and a binder full of drawings secretly collected by my sister and my mom. I thought I wasn’t going to get in because of where I came from and my binder didn’t look like the other kid’s portfolio surrounding mine. I got a letter saying that I got in. I was so ecstatic that I got in a highly rated school even though I submitted just an ordinary binder. As senior year came around, I applied to School of Visual Arts, Ringling, and Miami Dade College. I went to School of Visual Arts, grew as an individual and as an artist. I had one teacher tell me that I wouldn’t make it in the industry as an artist and it totally crushed my spirit for weeks. However, I kept pushing forward being positive and graduated from School of Visual Arts with my head held high. I worked as an interventionist, tutor, graphic designer, and artist one year later. This summer I worked hard to start a small art camp called Experimental Art Camp in Miami Shores to give children the chance to experiment and push the endless possibilities in art mediums.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I am a visual artist that create for myself taking my observations and reality into paintings. I often use mixed media and can’t seem to stay to one medium for too long. Each medium I use I build a relationship to create and put all of my experience in one tool for every stroke. I hope that people can take away from it that my art is a reality we may not be aware of everyday but exist. I can’t speak for someone else of their reality, observations, experience but myself and display it in the world. My inspiration is daily life, children, media, and sometimes dreams. My artwork evolves as I learn new experiences and become wiser.
What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
As an artist I define success where you connect to people through your art and have conversations about it to people. I feel that it’s important to have self-love and passion will help you succeed as artist. That’s how people and potential buyers connect with you and take you and your work seriously.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
You can see my artwork on Instagram @amsoulart and later, on me after my updated website. People can support my work by inviting me to sell at art shows, buying my art by commissions, and showing up to my art shows in Miami.
