Today we’d like to introduce you to Yas Gonzalez.
Yas, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I studied design and fashion at the Miami University of Art and Design. While still in school I was able to launch a successful swimwear line that caught the attention of the fashion industry. This initial success is what motivated me to officially start my own line and open the doors to the Yas Gonzalez Boutique and Atelier. Behind the doors of my boutique one can find anything from a dress for brunch, to a red carpet-worthy piece.
Through the years my portfolio has grown to be something to marvel at. Talent and hard work are evident when you have names like Carolina Herrera, Oscar de la Renta, Alexander McQueen, Balmain o Christian Louboutin on your roster! My designs have decorated various music videos as well star-studded stages and numerous red carpets. From Ricky Martin, to Jennifer Lopez and Lady Gaga, I continue to expand her influence in the fashion world.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
In my newest project, the Havana Collection, you will get to see Cuba through my eyes. Each piece was carefully elaborated to truly represent the most beautiful aspects from my home country. The fabric used to craft each piece was created by me using images that I captured during my last trip to Cuba – such as the floor tiles at my grandmother’s house. The Havana Collection is easy to love, whether you are Cuban and want to wear a piece of home, or you simply want to own a beautifully crafted piece that’s is as unique as it is colorful. After all, la Vida es un carnival (life is a carnival).
Artists rarely, if ever pursue art for the money. Nonetheless, we all have bills and responsibilities and many aspiring artists are discouraged from pursuing art due to financial reasons. Any advice or thoughts you’d like to share with prospective artists?
My advice is to continue to follow your dreams and know that all your hard work and sacrifices will pay off in the end.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
My work has been featured on: People en Español, Vanity Fair, British GQ, House of Coco, Mercedez Benz Swim Week, Fort Lauderdale Fashion Week, South Florida Fashion Week, and New York Fashion Week. She has also been the main designer at Miami Swim Week for 3 years. Most recently I was featured in British Vogue as an up and coming fashion designer.
