Art & Life with Katie Jean

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Jean.

Katie, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
My art story starts not as a child, but a Pharmaceutical major in college! I’ve always loved art, but I didn’t think I could make a career out of it until I took an elective class – from there, I switched my major to Fine Arts. I’m currently going to school for Public Relations and Graphic Design, and both of these degrees have been helping me flourish and develop as an artist!

I actually started with digital art and moved onto more traditional forms later on. There is a uniqueness that can be found in every medium – whether digital or traditional – and I want to hone every single one of them! Now, not only do I make a living from my art, I also work at a college gallery as the director in Ocala! Hard work and dedication has gotten me a long way.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
The art I create is bright and cheery – which is the vibe that I want to give people. I want someone to look at my art and say “wow, look at those colors!” or “this looks so happy!”.

I struggle with depression, and using brighter colors tends to cheer me up if I’m feeling down and out. I hope that even just seeing a goofy, colorful watercolor animal can make someone smile.

Artists rarely, if ever pursue art for the money. Nonetheless, we all have bills and responsibilities and many aspiring artists are discouraged from pursuing art due to financial reasons. Any advice or thoughts you’d like to share with prospective artists?
As much as I hate to admit it, I highly recommend having a part-time job to help support yourself at first until you get a solid footing on your artistic income.
