Today we’d like to introduce you to Jesse Brody.
Jesse, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I grew up in Miami, Florida, and studied jewelry design at the Tyler School of Art. Later I switched disciplines to receive my Masters in Industrial Design at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. I spent time living in Florence, Italy and trained to become a professional goldsmith. In 2002 I founded Jesse Brody Design studios my personal atelier and CA Modern Home its retail venue.
I am also an Adjunct Professor at the College of Architecture and the Arts at Florida International University.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I believe in responsible design. Every designer should question why they are utilizing materials in their objects. Our world is polluted with ephemeral junk. If you cannot honor the material with something worthy, don’t waste it!
For this reason, I typically only work in materials overlooked by most such as reclaimed wood, copper, hot-rolled steel, and aluminum. I transform these humble materials into beautifully handcrafted works of art. I love to change peoples perception of a utilitarian material by showing them value in something they had deemed valueless.
What would you recommend to an artist new to the city, or to art, in terms of meeting and connecting with other artists and creatives?
Yes, work or teach part-time at a school or university. Not only is it rewarding to help the students it keeps you social and connected.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
My work is represented and sold through my retail showroom. CA Modern Home. www.camodernhome.com
