Meet Vicki Siegel of Vicki Siegel Art in Delray Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vicki Siegel.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am a full time working artist with my studio in Delray Beach. I create contemporary mixed media paintings, show and sell my work, teach painting in various art schools, give lectures and workshops and judge shows.

I was born in New York City and raised in both New York and Chicago. I have been involved in the arts since I was a teen, taking drawing and painting classes at the Art Institute of Chicago. I received my BFA and continued on with MFA coursework in photography in Rome, Italy. I lived in Italy for seven years working as an art director and producer of large-scale multi image pieces in Milan. When I returned to the US, I was pursuing a creative career in advertising in South Florida, working in both print and video, I renewed my passion for painting and I left the advertising field to work full time as an artist.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As an artist, I am also an entrepreneur. I make sure I have the “creative time” I need to create the work I want to make. Besides creating beautiful art work, I am challenged to do all of the business side of having a small business by myself. There is accounting and PR, follow up for workshops and classes, letters to collectors and curators, etc. Being organized and keeping some time for the business side of art is important. I recently moved my studio into a new arts incubator, the Arts Warehouse, in Pineapple Grove, Delray Beach. This opens my studio to the public during business hours and I will be working around the other creatives who have their studios in the building. Having a connection to others as well as time alone to create is important to me.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Vicki Siegel Art story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a contemporary artist whose mixed media paintings, photography and sculpture explore the connection between memory and reality. By combining painting and photography together, I create images that unite my fascination with the world around me and my obsession with the physicality of paint. Blending the two art forms is a process that results in images that are both real and imaginary. I am a paint “geek.” Alongside traditional painting techniques, I experiment with new and exciting methods of using paint. There is nothing like having a paintbrush in my hand and losing myself in the act of painting — “being in the zone”. This combination of painting with photography is unique and cutting edge and sets my work apart from others.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Maybe this article will bring me luck! But up until now, showing up in the studio every day is more important than luck. I am lucky to be an artist, to have this outlet to express myself and to have people love what I make. I am grateful for the people in my life that appreciate and support what I do.
