Today we’d like to introduce you to Tova Palomino.
Tova, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Shortly after graduating from Florida State University, I moved to Los Angeles in December of 2011 with dreams of becoming the next big thing. In hopes of keeping up with the younger models and actors as far as looks, I started researching on natural skin care. What started out as merely a ploy to succeed, evolved into a lifestyle, transitioning myself to creating my own natural/organic products to use permanently. I received so many compliments on my skin and appearance! I told them what I was using but it wasn’t until a friend of mine recommended that I should start a business. Few months later, God-ish Skin was born!
In 2018, I moved back to south florida and wanted to expand my passion for self-care. I went to school and graduated as an esthetician. Usually, its recommended that after graduation, you apply to spa businesses to gain more experience and build your clientele. I said screw dat, and just took a leap of faith and rented my own spa room and made announcements that Skincare by Tova is now open! As a licensed esthetician, it opened more lines of communication between myself and others who are looking to maintain their self-care routines or develop a self-care routine. It also allow myself to gain trust in my community from those who were looking for solutions. It also broadens my knowledge in the beauty industry which benefits God-ish and my clients.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Hell no. lol. As I began my journey as an entrepreneur, I noticed that every day is different, even every hour is not the same. MONEY is a huge foundation for surviving as business owner. Its not guaranteed that you will make money, so its up to us to determined our fate. I had several part time jobs while I launched God-ish Skin. I worked on God-ish early in the morning and late at night, and I worked my other jobs in between. For Skincare by Tova, I wanted to have a very flexible schedule and I knew that if I worked for someone else, that wouldn’t be the case. It was one of the biggest risks I have taken because I opened my doors with only four clients and now in a few months, I am at over 60 clients.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Skincare by Tova and God-ish Skin – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I am very pro-natural/less chemicals in my life which reflects in my businesses. God-ish Skin is my baby. It was my first step into becoming an entrepreneur. The products that I sell are made by me. I did alot of research on benefits of essential oils and incorporated a few in my formulas. It makes my day to hear from my customers how much of a difference my products have made to their appearance. As of now, what I offer to my customers are a facial cleanser, facial toner, facial moisturizer, private daily care, men beard shampoo and men beard oil. Each product is named after either a deity or religious significant person. God-ish Skin is a reflection of my spirituality,
Skincare by Tova was created to provide facial and body waxing services. To entertain myself, I created interesting names for my services. These services are open for both women and men. What is the most popular service is the vajacial. A vajacial is a facial but for your vagina which my clients love after I’m done with their wax! Men are also able to get a “vajacial”, I call theirs the “Nuts and Bolts Deluxe”.
Any predictions for the industry over the next few years?
I hope that in 5-10 years, more consumers will be interested in natural products. Would love to see my community focus more on self-care and establishing “me time”. Also, as a small black own business, I hope to see a rise in more small black own bushiness and rise in the support for those businesses.
