Meet Sidhbh Gallagher of Gallagher Plastic Surgery in Coral Gables

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sidhbh Gallagher.

Sidhbh, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born and raised by a seaside town in Ireland. I studied to become a doctor in Dublin, Ireland but soon realized that it would be difficult to fulfill my dream of becoming a plastic surgeon (especially as a woman) back then in Ireland. For that reason, I left home at the age of 26 and came to Philadelphia where I trained for five years in general surgery. After that, I completed three more years of plastic and reconstructive surgery training at Indiana University. Once I completed that, I traveled to Europe and Australia to learn techniques in gender affirmation surgery. When I returned, I was hired back at Indiana University as faculty.

There I founded the Indiana University Gender Affirmation Surgery Program and served as director for almost five years. The Indiana winters however got to me and any excuse I could find I was visiting Miami. In 2020 right before the pandemic myself and my sister Neasa set up a practice here in Miami focused on gender affirmation and cosmetic surgery. Despite all the craziness of 2020, we have about 1000 patients, to date, who fly in from all over.

Has it been a smooth road?
Starting a gender affirmation program in conservative Indiana five years ago was certainly interesting. However, most staff quickly fell in love with taking care of the transgender community. It is heartwarming to see people open their minds and become more accepting.

Working with transgender and non-binary individuals is the most meaningful and gratifying work I have ever done. Patients count down the days till surgery and there is a wonderful atmosphere around our office as people’s biggest dreams are finally realized. Patients have to go through so much to transition so having surgery is such a special occasion for them and their families.

Certain traditions have grown from this and for example after we remove the dressings in females to male patients, they often will keep their shirts open (Rico Suave style) to proudly show off their new masculine chests. Transphobia is still a challenge and mainly represents a need for education. For patients, good information is also hard to find. To that end, we take advantage of several social media platforms (especially Tik Tok) to educate both our patients and the public. In addition, have a patient guide to transition “Affirmed” being published this fall.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Gallagher Plastic Surgery – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Myself and my sister Neasa, who was a former school principal in Dubai, started this practice with a very clear goal. This was to be the very best in our field. Both of us in different ways are perfectionists- I focus on safely delivering excellent results to patients while Neasa ensures the best patient experience possible.

We are internationally known for our work with the transgender community but also focus on a variety of cosmetic surgeries (breast, abdominoplasty liposuction, labiaplasty). As the pandemic calms down, we look forward to expanding our Medspa services with a focus on lip enhancement, skin tightening and anti-aging treatments.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
We are still in the honeymoon phase with Miami – the city can do no wrong. I love the diversity and how despite living in a city nature is still so close with the beaches. Our patients love visiting here for their surgeries.
