Meet Sabrina Alvado-Troutman of Bree Bree’s Cupcakes in Homestead

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sabrina Alvado-Troutman.

Sabrina, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Well, I was a sophomore in high school about four years ago when this all started. I needed extra money to help around the house with my mom and so I thought, “why not sell something at school?” At first I didn’t know what to sell since everyone else sold chips and candy, I wanted to be different and unique, so the light bulb in my head turned on and I skimmed through my baking book I have gotten at the time and found a cupcake recipe that wasn’t too hard to make and looked delicious which were brownie cupcakes topped with mini marshmallows and mini M&Ms. At first they weren’t the best looking cupcakes but within a week, they looked better than ever.

So during my junior year, I stopped baking for a while but people who would normally bought cupcakes the previous year before, we’re begging me to bake them again since they loved how presentable and tasty the cupcakes were, so that’s what gave me the motivation to bake again. I did of course, started changing the types of cupcakes I made and started a “Buy 5 and get the 6th one free deal”. This is what built up my reputation at school for making deliciously creative cupcakes that I started getting some orders here and there. Even my teachers would buy and order cupcakes from me throughout the school year including my senior year. And that’s when I realized this is what I’d like to do for the rest of my life.

So in the Summer of 2015, I actually made an Instagram and Facebook account for my cupcake business and I’ve been building it up little by little as I study at school and go to work since then and of course on my spare time, come up with different cupcake recipes and improving on my baking skills as well.

Has it been a smooth road?
So far it’s been pretty smooth but of course there has been a few bumps on the road with customers complaining about the price mainly but as time passed, they eventually understood that I’m starting up a business at the moment.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Bree Bree’s Cupcakes story. Tell us more about the business.
My business at the moment is just an at-home type of business. What I do is mainly bake just for students at school or employees at work to advertise my cupcakes and get some recognition.

I mainly specialize in creating cupcakes and making them deliciously good in both looks and taste for the time being.

What I’m mainly known for is my stuffed brownie cupcakes with M&Ms and Oreos and being able to create customers’ orders without any issues.

What I’m most proud about my business is knowing that people are always wanting what I bake no matter if it’s the usual or something different and that my business is getting more recognized by more people each day.

I guess what sets me apart from others is that most of my customers have tome me they’ve seen cupcakes that look good but are dry or that they just didn’t look for some event but still tasted good, while mine are both good-looking and delicious at the same time.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
In the next 5-10 years, I see Bree Bree’s Cupcakes being an actual bakery and cafe in Miami filled with people from around the US and the world wanting to try out one of my delicious creations.

I do see some changes in the type of baked goods and treats I’ll be selling which will be still cupcakes, and then there’ll be cakes, cake pops, fudge, cookies, and even coffee, teas and juices.

I will love to take in orders for weddings, sweet sixteens, baby showers, and other major parties and events.
