Meet Rachel Speck of Speck Fitness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Speck.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’m a former professional ballet dancer and trained at one of the best ballet schools in the world, Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet. I then went on to dance here at Miami City Ballet. When I stopped dancing, I wanted to find a way to stay in shape and keep my ballerina body.

I became a certified personal trainer, nutrition coach, Pilates instructor, and group fitness instructor. I started working at gyms in Miami like Crunch, Equinox, Ironflower Fitness, Sobe Fit Body, Ultimate Sports Institute, and more. I very quickly realized though that I wanted to have my own business, so I started Speck Fitness, a traveling fitness company. I also wanted to keep ballet in my life and a part of Speck Fitness. I started combing ballet exercises with aspects of fitness like weights, resistance, cardio, and more repetitions. I eventually created my own trademarked workout, Tendu Toning® which is a fusion of ballet and fitness. I now have 2 workout DVDs for Tendu Toning®, equipment like balls and bands, apparel, and a certification program. Speck Fitness teaches Tendu Toning® at multiple gyms in the area, and a lot of trainers have been certified in the method, so people are teaching it everywhere now.

Speck Fitness still travels around to different clients for personal training, but we also have a full ballet program at Ultimate Sports Institute in Weston. It’s ages 3-8 and ages 5 and up we offer private lessons. Tendu Toning® is also not just a workout for people to get a ballerina body. It’s also used as a conditioning and cross training workout for dancers. We do private Tendu Toning® sessions with dancers from all over Miami and Broward, plus we do master classes and summer intensives. Speck Fitness started out as just a traveling training company back in 2011, but now in 2017 it’s a very diverse fitness company that offers something for everyone.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The biggest challenge has been that I started Speck Fitness when I was only 21. I didn’t have anyone to help me financially or just with guidance and advice on running a business. It’s been a lot of learning as I go and trial and error.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Speck Fitness – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Speck Fitness is very different from any other fitness company. We don’t just offer personal training. We have the whole ballet part that no other company has with combining ballet and fitness together. We have clients from 3-70 years old. The 3 year olds are ballet students, and the 70 year old is someone who wants the luxury of their trainer coming to their house. We also have our own signature and trademarked workout with DVDs, equipment, and apparel.

With our ballet program, we do performances like The Nutcracker. A huge thing that we started a few years ago are Skype workouts, so we now have clients all over the country and even the world. That has become huge for us and clients love it. Especially our local clients who travel for work or go on vacation, they can still workout. The whole workout is done via Skype or FaceTime so we can see the client and correct them, and they can see us demonstrate etc. No other company offers these many things and is so diverse. Rachel Speck, the owner of Speck Fitness and creator of Tendu Toning® started all of this when she was only 21. Now she’s only 27 and very successful in this industry.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Speck Fitness is definitely looking to grow Tendu Toning® and really go big with it. We already have 2 DVDs out, so looking to film more and have a whole streaming option on our website. We also would like to grow our Skype clientele. We’ve also been getting a lot into apparel. We currently sell some very popular ballerina leggings, so we would like to go bigger and expand our apparel line.
