Today we’d like to introduce you to Miguel Irizarry.
Miguel, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Originally from Providence, Rhode Island. I began my career at 18 workings for WWKX Cumulus. Before leaving I held positions as Promotions Director & Midday Personality. I moved to Philadelphia at 21 to work Promotions & On-Air Overnights for Beasley Broadcast. I spent four years at WRDW where I held positions as Assistant Music Director, Mixshow Coordinator & Night Show Host.
Philadelphia led me to Portland, Maine where I worked for WHTP Mainstream Media as Music Director & Afternoon Host. 2.5 years later I landed WPOW Miami as Night Show Host. A year later I became the Program Director & Midday Personality.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Far from a smooth road – a lot of hours, a lot of sleepless nights, a lot of moving around, a lot of uncertainty & lessons learned. “Pay your dues” is a real concept in radio – consistent work ethic & a relentless state of mind is key in our line of work.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I work for Entercom Miami. I program & manage Power 96. I’m very progressive in terms of my programming philosophy. I like to program as local to Miami as possible, while also playing the “radio game.” Power 96 is a 1 of 1 radio station, its listener is true to Miami & the culture. Power 96 was designed to be a boutique radio station – we try our hardest to program it this way!
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Never – I’m where I am today because of all the lessons learned along the way. You need the valleys just as much as you need the peaks!
